A reader in the UK has taken up the plight of the galgos in Spain with her MEP. Derek Vaughan, one of the Labour MEP’s for Wales has replied that he ‘was very concerned about the problem and has tabled a Written Question to the Commission to bring it to wider attention and see what can be done to help end this unnecessary suffering’.
Derek Vaughan needs the support of as many other MEPs as possible. Please write to your MEP and ask them to support the Written Question. Below is a sample letter which is a variation of the one to the president of the European Commission already on Galgo News.
If anyone can translate it into other languages, please do so and circulate it to the galgo rescue organisations in your country. (Send me a copy to for reference)

Due to the world wide reach of the Internet, it is impossible to hide most anything from anyone who owns a computer. We live in a global community where news is shared instantaneously on a daily basis.
There is a huge volume of news on the Internet denouncing Spain as a tourist destination. The reason? Not Al-Qaeda, not bad weather, not lack of sightseeing but for the atrocious treatment of animals in that country.
One of the most horrendous atrocities is the annual massacre of the galgo espanol, the Spanish greyhound – from the moment they are born until the moment they die they know nothing but suffering and misery. They are fed nothing more than stale mouldy bread, and ‘live’ in oppressive cold dreary conditions. Come the end of January, after they are used for hunting and the season ends, the annual holocaust of the Galgo begins.
The way these animals are killed is worse than any horror movie you will ever see. These animals are hung from trees, thrown down deep wells, dragged behind cars, shot, bludgeoned, as well as being abandoned en mass to meet their fate with a speeding car or slowly starve to death. News has just been released stating some are donated by hunters for veterinary students and subsequently embalmed ALIVE. Please take a moment, clear your head, and think about this. The anguish they feel is impossible to imagine.
Thus far, Spain’s answer to all the aforementioned atrocities committed on these dogs is to deny that any of this happens. It is quite obvious that this kind of attitude does nothing to improve their awful worldwide reputation for being one of the worst EU countries regarding animal welfare.
Spain is the only country which still allows hunting with Galgos. The mass murder of 50,000 sentient beings per year simply for the sake of a few mens’ ‘entertainment’ is clearly unacceptable. The trail of bloodshed and misery is unbearable.
The EU MUST implement protection for the Spanish Galgos which will ensure they can live a life free from the immense torture they face on a daily basis.

Last year the Swedish government was criticized by animal protection and conservation organizations across Europe, after it authorized the killing of a substantial proportion of the country’s wolf population. No less than 12,000 applied to hunt 27 wolves, the set quota. The majority of animals were killed on the first day of what was believed to be a less than humane hunt.

Have you come across the Intergroup for Animal Welfare, the group within the EU working on behalf of the animals? Can they not help in this, or maybe the MP needs to be directed towards them, for support in his letter-writing.
Oh another example of how typical the Spanish treat their animals…It’s a disgusting country and it’s no wonder I boycott visiting there!

20000 years or so of companionship with humans and galgos (and other dogs) get this sort of mistreatment? Someone’s going to run short of karma… At least the Orientals eat them, they’re not just killed and wasted. Best is when the dog takes its place as a respected companion and shares its karma with its human alpha as it dies of old age.
A petition should be started so all people from all countires can sign. Being part of the USA you cannot sign it. If someone can put that up as a regualr petition, it will get more signitures. I would love to sign and speak my peace and cannot!!

Yes, the group within the EU is called Eurogroup for Animals, I have written about them in my book, in the chapter on EU laws. I ran a campaign to write to them last year, and the MEPs particularly interested in animal welfare. Everyone needs to write to either the EU President, Senor Barroso (Ive put the link to my letter to him on this post) and to their MEP, which is what this letter is about. You can send as many letters as you like to as many of the EU MEPs as you like, including the President. Please also ask your friends to do the same.

Un enorme volume di notizie su Internet denuncia la Spagna come destinazione turistica. Il motivo? Non è Al-Qaeda, ne il cattivo tempo, neanche la diminuzione di turisti, ma per il trattamento atroce degli animali in questo paese.
Una delle atrocità più orrende è il massacro annuale dei galgo espanol, il levriero spagnolo – dal momento della nascita fino al momento della morte non conoscono nulla a parte sofferenza e miseria. Essi sono alimentati solo con pane raffermo ammuffito, e ‘vivono’ in condizioni pietose. L’olocausto annuale del Galgo comincia alla fine di gennaio dopo esser stati utilizzati per la caccia.
Il modo in cui questi animali vengono uccisi è peggio di qualsiasi film dell’orrore. Vengono appesi agli alberi, gettati in pozzi profondi, trascinati da automobili in corsa, fucilati, bastonati, oltre ad essere abbandonati in massa finché lentamente non vengono uccisi dalla fame. E’ stato appena pubblicato un articolo nel quale viene affermato che alcuni di questi esemplari sono stati donati da cacciatori a studenti di veterinaria, e successivamente, imbalsamati vivi. Per favore fermatevi un attimo, liberate la testa e pensate a tutto questo, no l’angoscia che patiscono è immaginabile.
Finora, la risposta della Spagna a tutte queste atrocità commesse è di negare che tutto ciò accada. Is an action of some hunters that we have horrified by the evil involved. They are pursued by the law. Some organizations have been able to save their lives, but unfortunately have not arrived in time to the majority. The forces of law must be robust against these animals ( not humans)

You will know only too well that members of SEPRONA and the law enforcers including judges can also be hunters and therefore do not uphold the law and will let the perpetrators ofanimal cruelty walk free from court. Look at the case of Operation Harry y Clavijo….how many of the men walked free? And the dogs were given back to the hunters………….thats what makes it so hard for all of you working to help the get the galgos protected from the abuse.
Send me any stories you have where SEPRONA and thelaw enforcers have prosecuted perpetrators of animal abuse and traffiking in galgos.
