Save the Galgo – Stop the suffering

Spanish hunters abandon podencos too, please help them

Anton 2 Tina 03 01 2011 250 I’m putting out an appeal for podencos, for people to offer them forever homes. There are three at Galgos del Sol (scroll down to Anton and Freya, and Lucky is a new arrival today, 4 pages of them on the Galgos France website, Ibizan Hound Rescue has many deserving podencos, and let’s not forget SARA Lanzarote in the Canary Islands – poor Mozaga has never known life outside of the refuge. Podencos suffer terrible maltreatment on the Spanish Islands, both Canaries and Balearic. Mostly their only hope is to be rehomed on mainland Europe or in the UK. Pepis Refuge is another small British-run shelter with many delightful podencos among their dogs looking for forever homes. And Phoenix Association in Dordogne, France, has Roda and Mindy who arrived in November from SARA Lanzarote and who are looking for forever homes in France.

Please think of the podencos as well as the galgos.

UPDATE 20 01 2011 Happy to report that podenco Anton has today left the Galgos del Sol shelter to travel to a new life in Germany. Bonne Chance Anton.

Hi, Podencos are the greatest dogs in the world! They suffer as much as galgos, that’s why we fight for them with our whole heart and soul! 90 podencos were adopted last year of the shelter in La linea, Spain. In the shelter in La linea are over 600 dogs. 200 of them are podencos. We made a movie to inform people about the suffering of podencos: The podenco massacre.

We are glad there are many others who fight for them.
    Keep up the good work!
    Thanks,

I can not begin to say how much i adore my Podenco, she is beautiful, sweet, comical, loyal and loving. Please anyone considering giving one of these wonderful animals a home do not be put off by the fact they are used as hunting dogs, they make fabulous pets, they are quiet and clean and mine is acutally very lazy! yes her nature is to hunt but her loyalty ensures she is not far from my side (most of the time!)Her nature is such that she must have gentle handling sudden unexpected movements scare her as does doors unless they are wide open, but she is so, so worth all the coaxing and reasurring. I feel so privilaged to have her in my life, i just wish to God there was more i could do to help all other podencos.

    Bonjour
Thanks for writing in support of the podencos, as
you say, they are beautiful loyal loving hounds. And people need to be
aware that not all of them will hunt. Yesterday I visited the two Podenco
Canario bitches from SARA Lanzarote which are now in foster in France.
Mindy and Romana are pretty beige and white hounds, they have been in SARA since
being puppies, have never hunted and arent interested in hunting. They
have been here two months now, their recal is excellent and they will make
fabulous companion hounds. Sadly the SARA podencos on Lanzarote have
little chance of being adopted on the island, there are so many of them
abandoned and roaming the island. Their only hope of a home outside of the
shelter is to be adopted in mainland Europe. Mindy and Romana are having
their rabies blood test shortly and will then be in the quarantine process for
possible rehoming in the UK in 6 months time. Anyone reading this and
    interested should email me.
Thanks for reading GN and for supporting the galgos
    and podencos.
    Amities
    Beryl

    Dear Readers
I am delighted to report that we have adopted Mindy. She is an amazing dog. Despite her history, you could not ask for a more gentle and loving dog. She has the company of our Border Collie Meg and with their combined agility and speed , they make perfect companions. We could not imagine our lives without her. Thank you to all to those people who through their determination and commitment, brought Mindy to us.

Bonjour I met Mindy and Rhoda at their foster home and, as do with all galgos and podencos, fell completely in love with them. I can imagine Mindy being great friends with Meg, both working breeds and very active. Please send some pix of them, if you can. band@bbrennan.eu.
And thank you for adopting a podenco and publicising what fabulous pets they make.
