SARA Protectora, Lanzarote – costs involved in adopting a cat or dog
This is ZP, a 9 month old Podenco Canario. He’s in the SARA Protectora refuge on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Unless adopted on mainland Europe, he is destined to spend the rest of his life in the shelter. Read on.
SARA Protectora is the refuge on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. They take in dogs and cats – and the difficulty is rehoming them – very limited on the islands. Here is a guide as to the costs involved in rescuing a dog or cat.

Podencos with SARA in the Canary Islands – looking for forever homes
It’s extremely hard to find forever homes for abandoned dogs on the Spanish Islands, particularly the beautiful, affectionate and loyal podencos. SARA Lanzarote have these two beauties who desperately need the chance of life outside a shelter. Andrea describes them.
Pirulo is a very friendly and affectionate Podenco. He is obedient and will always watch out for the person that’s with him. He prefers to be cuddled and stroked than go to run or hunt, which is very special for these dogs. He is as well friendly with other dogs both male and female. He likes to be taken for walks, does not pull in the lead, we think he could even go without the lead.

Publicity for Podencos – help and forever homes wanted
For many years Rick and Lesley Beauchamp in the UK have been helping rehomed podencos rescued by SARA Lanzarote; virtually the only chance of a loving forever home is on mainland Europe. Thanks to Ed of Podencoworld for forwarding this clip of a BBC interview with Lesley. Please contact Ed or SARA Lanzarote if you are interested in helping these fabulous hounds.

Podencoworld – helping the podencos of La Linea, Spain
Passionate about Podencos! Why didn’t I find this website before? Maybe because I haven’t had time to do so much research into podenco sites because the Galgo news always takes so much time, as did researching for my book! Have a look at this very interesting website, Podencoworld. This link should take you through to the English translation; if it doesn’t click on the Union Jack on the lefthand side.

Spanish hunters abandon podencos too, please help them
I’m putting out an appeal for podencos, for people to offer them forever homes. There are three at Galgos del Sol (scroll down to Anton and Freya, and Lucky is a new arrival today, 4 pages of them on the Galgos France website, Ibizan Hound Rescue has many deserving podencos, and let’s not forget SARA Lanzarote in the Canary Islands – poor Mozaga has never known life outside of the refuge. Podencos suffer terrible maltreatment on the Spanish Islands, both Canaries and Balearic. Mostly their only hope is to be rehomed on mainland Europe or in the UK. Pepis Refuge is another small British-run shelter with many delightful podencos among their dogs looking for forever homes. And Phoenix Association in Dordogne, France, has Roda and Mindy who arrived in November from SARA Lanzarote and who are looking for forever homes in France.
Please think of the podencos as well as the galgos.

Humane Society International – can we enlist their help?
In November I received a circular email from Humane Society International in the US appealing for donations to help a team help Street Dogs in Bhutan. So I wrote and asked them to support our fight for protection for the Spanish galgos and podencos. Here’s a copy of their reply, and my response to them. If you wish to add your voice to mine, please write to them.

Sponsor a dog on Lanzarote, Tenerife, Ibiza – the best Christmas present!
It’s easy to overlook the problem for the abandoned dogs on the Spanish Islands, and so here’s a reminder of some of the associations who work extremely hard to save, care for and rehome these deserving animals. Podencos especially have a very hard life and their only hope of a future is off the islands on mainland Europe.
With Christmas coming up, why not think about Sponsoring a Dog. Here are links to the associations on Tenerife, Lanzarote and Ibiza who really need your help.

Podencos in the UK waiting for their forever families
Besides galgos, my passion is also for podencos, who also suffer cruelty at the hands of unfeeling hunters. Another thing which worries me about them is that this year, at Crufts, the dog show in London, there was a class for Podencos. So are they now also going to be a breed to suffer from over-breeding as they become a ‘latest must-have’ breed?
There are three podencos from the SARA Lanzarote shelter who are already in the UK, looking for forever homes. They are Abrila, Agora and Mozaga. Mozaga is one whose cute face is featured in the Podenco set of notelets for sale on Galgo News.
For more information on these dogs, please contact Rick or Lesley.
