This is ZP, a 9 month old Podenco Canario. He’s in the SARA Protectora refuge on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Unless adopted on mainland Europe, he is destined to spend the rest of his life in the shelter. Read on.
SARA Protectora is the refuge on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. They take in dogs and cats – and the difficulty is rehoming them – very limited on the islands. Here is a guide as to the costs involved in rescuing a dog or cat.
Adopt, buy, give away …. bringing a pet home is a big responsibility, not just care and basic needs also if expenses. A pet involves minimal expense to be covered so it can lead a healthy and happy live. For this reason in deciding to bring a pet home, we must seriously consider whether we can absorb those costs, not today, tomorrow or this year but for the life of the pet.
To get an idea, here are some approximate costs are caused:
Dog Cat
Small Medium Big
Food 15 € 50 € 70 € 50 €
Frontline Pipettes 6 € 8 € 9 € 6 €
Total Month 21 € 58 € 79 € 56 €
n
Shampoo 6 €
Brush 4 €
Kennel 40 – 200€
Feeder 5 €
Driker 5 €
Collar 8 €
Leash 15 €
Carrier 40 – 200€ depending on where adopted
Microchip 40 € Unique payment (if adopted, it usually is paid for by the shelter)
Veterinary Consultation 28 – 62€ Depending if it is urgent
Hairdresser 23 – 30€ Depending if it needs grooming and clipping
Sterilization 80-300€ Unique payment (if adopted, it usually is paid for by the shelter)
Vaccines 20-25€ Annual payment (if adopted, it usually paid for by the shelter during the first year)
All these expenses are approximate and may be altered either by the establishment, product brand, age, race or dog health conditions.
If the dog is considered a “dangerous breed” carries other costs you need to know: civil liability insurance (yearly renewal, according to company price € 100), medical-psycho (renewal every 5 years, price 30 €), the official certificate veterinarian according to criteria of the law (yearly renewal, price 40 €), criminal record (price € 3.54), with all this are administrative license for the possession of potentially dangerous animals is personal and not transferable (renewal every 5 years) .
Pets are company for ust, give us love and we are faithful to the end of their days, taking all that into account, do not you think they deserve this and more?
It is very difficult to rehome the animals taken in by SARA, their main hope is to find forever homes on mainland Europe. Here you can read about the animals, so many of them are podencos……if you are holidaying on Lanzarote, please pay the shelter a visit and give them support. It’s a wonderful morale booster for all the volunteers.
