The temperatures in Scandinavia, especially Finland, are very different from Spain, especially for the thin-coated galgos. Here’s a story about the Finnish association which rehomes galgos, Kodittomat Espanjan Koirat ry. Kati explains.
Kodittomat Espanjan Koirat ry – The Homeless Dogs of Spain association in English – was established in 2006 by Miia Marjamäki, the president of association. Within the past 6 years the association has found new homes from Finland for over 2000 dogs.

Some months ago we told the story of Rey, abandoned, surviving on virtually nothing, he’d finally collapsed and almost given up the struggle. Some months on, he is doing ok, but a new problem has arisen. Rey needs help! He needs you, we need you! Here’s his story…
Rey came to 112 Carlota Galgos several months ago, found giving up, life had let him down. He lay in the dust with life draining from him,.. down and out. He was seen and rescued. He stayed with his rescuer in Sevilla for a month and along with Polyana joined us at 112 carlota galgos for us to recouperate them and socialise them into family life.
Rey .. seems he has everything against him, he is a black galgo in Spain, he is older and he is a natural hunter. He cannot be scolded for something which has been bred into him, he lived and kept himself alive by hunting. He is a hunter, he will hunt, and yet he will walk by your side like the gentlest galgo you know.
SOS Animals is being evicted – they have until Friday to find somewhere else for all their rescued dogs. This is one of the pieces of news which always enrages me…the authorities are supposed to be responsible for all abandoned animals – we all know they turn a blind eye much of the time. And they penalise and make life difficult for the wonderful people who run refuges, fundraise, volunteers. Ohhhh, it makes me sooooo angry! Among the galgos rescued in Murcia at the end of the winter 2010 hunting season was a brindle bitch, living rough in a series of pipes. Tina Solera set out to catch her, but that was easier said than done. Over two weeks went by, the galga evading capture until one day she was spotted sharing a pizza with a little girl. Tina gave a collar and leash to the girl, who got the collar over the galga’s head, and at last she could be taken to the refuge.
