  • Toledo, trash on the streets – Baas Galgo to the rescue!

Trashed galgo Baas 1 250 1 2012Last year there was Esperanza, a galga starved, beaten badly, chucked for dead in a rubbish skip in Spain. Rescued as she breathed her last, she was saved from the dead and finally, after nearly a year of treatment and rehabilitation, she even walks unaided – not very steadily, but still, she walks unaided. Two fingers to the bastard hunter who did that to her!

Now we have another, left for dead with the trash on a street in Toledo. People walked by whilst this galgo was unable to stand, walk, badly beaten, chucked out with the trash. Don’t tell me there is a God! No God makes the innocents suffer like this. Only the sick bastards (in this case Spanish, but could be anywhere in the world) who do this to innocent animals. Baas Galgo has saved him.

  • Cruel Spain – galgos tied up in caves to starve to death – shame on Spain

Cuevas Chinchilla cave entrance 01 2011 190 The entrance to Hell. From A.P.A.P. Albacete Noah’s Ark we want to present a new case of animal abuse, which occurred in the town of Chinchilla de Montearagón. Again, the galgo, noble animal, an innocent victim of the cruelty and ruthlessness of some heartless owners.

Last week members of the Protective went to check the call of some youths who made a grisly discovery, several bodies of dogs in a cave near the village.

Fearing the worst we viewed some of the caves in the area and found in several of them the same sad scenario, dogs in various stages of decomposition, bound with ropes to rocks inside the caves where they had been left to die slowly of starvation. .. and even whole litters thrown into small pits from which they could not leave.

  • Spanish hunters abandon podencos too, please help them

Anton 2 Tina 03 01 2011 250 I’m putting out an appeal for podencos, for people to offer them forever homes. There are three at Galgos del Sol (scroll down to Anton and Freya, and Lucky is a new arrival today, 4 pages of them on the Galgos France website, Ibizan Hound Rescue has many deserving podencos, and let’s not forget SARA Lanzarote in the Canary Islands – poor Mozaga has never known life outside of the refuge. Podencos suffer terrible maltreatment on the Spanish Islands, both Canaries and Balearic. Mostly their only hope is to be rehomed on mainland Europe or in the UK. Pepis Refuge is another small British-run shelter with many delightful podencos among their dogs looking for forever homes. And Phoenix Association in Dordogne, France, has Roda and Mindy who arrived in November from SARA Lanzarote and who are looking for forever homes in France.

Please think of the podencos as well as the galgos.

  • Lurchers hung from a canal bridge – in England! The Mirror reports.

I rant against the Spanish galgueros and gitanos for their barbaric treatment towards galgos and podencos. But I will be the first to admit that British people can be just as sick and perpetrate horrendous cruelty to animals. The difference is that there is the RSPCA to follow up complaints of cruelty, far more than Seprona in Spain seems willing to do. And more Brits are likely to report cases of animal cruelty to the RSPCA than Spanish people are to report cruelty cases to Seprona, for fear of reprisals against themselves, their families, their homes, their cars. Intimidation, in other words.

But this sickening story is worrying – are there now sick Brits who emulate the Spanish hunters? Read the story

  • 130 Galgos from Seville to Scooby Medina!

Eva has sent this appeal on behalf of Scooby Medina. They are taking 130 galgos in over the course of the next month and need all sorts of help. Here’s what she says.

‘Over the next few weeks we will be rescuing 130 galgos from Seville. We are asking you for your help in every way possible. We require volunteers, vet volunteers, food, medicine and monetary donations. And of course, in the end the most important thing is to get the dogs in the shelter adopted. If you can donate any of these items, please let us know. We are doing three transport this month so we would be able to pick up any donations that are collected.

  • Spanish Galga Lola – an expressive poem to share with you

Rehoming Lola and Owen Jeminah Kunfeld 11 2010 200 I’d like to share this poem with you. Written by Lola, with a little help from her lifetime friend Owen Davis who adopted her, his wife works with Greyhounds in Nood Belgium. (Photo by Jemimah Kunfeld)

    LOLA’S POEM

Spain is the land of the heartless.
I don’t care about the mosque at Cordoba.
I don’t care any more about Pablo Casals.
Or what his cunning fingers did with the bow.
The white Alhambra, abounding in cool shade,
    Singing fountains and sunlight,
Is a story of long ago.
    Forget it.

  • Canicross in Murcia – Tina and galgo Guapo over the finishing line!

Start line! 250 Tina’s done it – she’s run her first Canicross today. Here’s what she says.

‘We have done the canicross. We had a great day although was almost a non starter for us when the race organisers thought it was a good idea to let off a few cannons……. yep, clever stuff as the dogs went crazy and Guapo pulled me over on a bank he was so scared and then spent 1/2hr shivering. Well we got to the start line and once we were off, he really enjoyed it. We came 12th overall but not sure out of how many, I will wait for results! Thanks for all the sponsors!

  • Greyhounds in Romania – boycot the sale and breeding – keep greyhounds safe

Romania poacher 11 2010 170 I regularly receive emails asking me to post appeals to highlight the stray dog problem in Greece and former Eastern Bloc countries like Romania. Whilst I’d like to protect every animal from mistreatment and suffering, my focus is on the plight of the galgos and podencos. I include greyhounds, as some of the problems facing them are also faced by the galgos.

I have been told about a problem in Romania

  • Dennis and Sandy, Spanish galgos needing forever homes

Dennis & Gaynor 11 250 Dennis and Sandy are galgos rescued by Tina Solera. They both deserve forever homes. Can you help?

Dennis was abandoned in Murcia. He is aprox 3 yrs, castrated, vaccine rabia and enfermadad, blood tests for leishmania and erchlicia are all negative and he is microchipped. He is loving and affectionate.
Sandy 3 Silvia 13 11 2010 250 Sandy was found living on the streets of Pilar de Horadada and as soon as she entered the refuge she was very happy to have water and food, she was even skinnier than she is now. She had the early stages of filaria, which was caught with treatment and she is now fine.

She loves cuddles and wants constant attention but in a positive way. She doesn’t hassle you, she just pushes her nose into you. She wants to love someone and wants someone to own her 100%. She was always nice with the other dogs but unfortunately one dog bit her tail off, can you see? She walks lovely on a lead also. She really is a very good dog and will make someone a fantastic companion.

If you can offer one of these wonderful deserving galgos a home, please contact Tina
