  • Chained galga starving to death – now fighting to live

Charl Adina carrying 250 12 2013This is galga Adina – chained up, no food, no water, left to starve to death. Rescued and taken immediately to the vet and kept in the clinic for a few days to monitor. Now she is safe with 112carlotagalgos. Charl tells the story – briefly

‘I now introduce you to Princess Adina!

Survival is her wish. Her longing to live through the darker days held her… brought her to this.. home.

At the moment we’re not testing her .. everything seems to be working ok for the moment. Bowels and urine. But she will be watched. Tests of the usual would only be false at this time. So recuperation is what she needs. Rest. Food. Rest. Food.

She longed to live.. here she is. Welcome to finca 112 Carlotagalgos special girl.

Embraced by chains.. you have been released. We have prayed for you. For strength to see a new day.. It’s yours to take now.. day by day. Little by little.. you will see your forever.’

Vet fees are already mounting, plus special food costs – please donate by paypal to comdelrio@hotmail.com.

  • Support the small associations – they need help too

Charl Harley eye 250All animal rescue associations in Spain do an amazing job, some of them are lucky enough to have hundreds of supporters to raise funds for their work. Which sadly often pushes out the small associations who lurch from month to month trying to pay feed and vet bills. You’ll know from previous posts on Galgo News that Charl and 112carlotagalgos has worked tirelessly for many years – longer than many larger associations – to raise awareness of the plight of the galgos and podencos. You can read more about the dogs here.

She now has some seriously ill galgos in her care, and the vet bills are mounting up as we speak.

  • Barcelona Dogs – stunning leather dog collars – raise funds for galgo rescue

Klea_levin_house 250One of the items which many associations use for fundraising is to sell dog collars. The huge majority of these collars are fabric martingale collars. My experience of these is that a) the dog scratches the collar and the fabric gets tatty and 2) I would never ever risk walking one of my galgos outside in one. It may be that I have bought a design not suited to the purpose which I required. But personally, I still prefer a shaped leather collar. And the most fantastic designs I have found are Barcelona Dogs.

I met Klea, their creator/designer, when I went to Barcelona at the beginning of December 2010, and I can confirm the superb quality of these collars and the designs unique. Even better that the price for the collars was not staggering, which I had expected, considering the ‘jewels’ used.

For anyone wishing to purchase a collar from Klea and at the same time raise funds for galgos in Spain, then if you order through the link on Galgo News, Klea will make a donation to my Galgo Fund. To ensure Galgo News gets the donation, please use the code berylgalgos. There are two special designs for galgos, at a discount price, but you can also choose a collar for any breed/type of dog from the whole range of collars. So please click on the website Click this link for special rescue galgo range.

As I’ve mentioned before, money raised from the sale of my book and notelets is used to donate to appeals for help with vet fees, which I post on Galgo News.

  • Jerez – death row – and the massacre continues! Shame on the galgueros!

Jerez 1 01 2011 200 Yet again, another list of poor galgos and a podenco on death row in the Jerez killing station. Did you know there are two killing stations in Jerez – Jerez and Gesser, the latter is a private one and it is claimed that they look after the dogs in their care better, food and water provided.

I have lost count of the number of galgo pictures sent to me this winter, of galgos in Jerez and Gesser and Mairena – all disposed of by the hunters………they couldn’t care less. Contact Maribel if anyone can help these pour souls.

Jerez 2 01 2011 200 When will the Spanish government, regional and municipal councils, hunting and racing federations going to realise the power of the Internet, how much adverse publicity this gives to Spain? So many people vote with their feet and their purses now – won’t go on holiday in Spain and the Spanish islands, won’t buy food produced in Spain.

Millions of Spaniards are unaware of this – why should the minority of hunters and bull fighters and other Spanish animal abusers erode the International image of this country. Always the same, the minority ruin life for the majority.

Pray that there will be some corner, some shelter for these poor abused souls. But all of them are overflowing, submerged beneath the sheer mass of abandoned and injured dogs. Support them, in any of the appeals I run. Even 10 euros will help towards buying food, vaccinations etc.

  • Liberty – 2 broken back legs, can you offer a foster home urgently?

Liberty 4 16 01 2011 155 Sometimes the sheer stupidity of some people is unbelievable. You don’t have to be a hunter to be cruel, as this story shows. This galgo was rescued over Xmas by a woman who lives in a 3rd floor apartment in Benalmadena. Last week she went out and left a window ajar. The galgo pushed open the window, got onto the balcony and jumped!

The galgo has been operated on by a hospital in Benalmadena, he has staples inside the leg and stitches outside. He has a hole left for drainage of liquid. He fell to the ground. The neighbour saw the dog, called the girl and he was eventually taken to the vet. The diagnosis is

  • Spanish hunters abandon podencos too, please help them

Anton 2 Tina 03 01 2011 250 I’m putting out an appeal for podencos, for people to offer them forever homes. There are three at Galgos del Sol (scroll down to Anton and Freya, and Lucky is a new arrival today, 4 pages of them on the Galgos France website, Ibizan Hound Rescue has many deserving podencos, and let’s not forget SARA Lanzarote in the Canary Islands – poor Mozaga has never known life outside of the refuge. Podencos suffer terrible maltreatment on the Spanish Islands, both Canaries and Balearic. Mostly their only hope is to be rehomed on mainland Europe or in the UK. Pepis Refuge is another small British-run shelter with many delightful podencos among their dogs looking for forever homes. And Phoenix Association in Dordogne, France, has Roda and Mindy who arrived in November from SARA Lanzarote and who are looking for forever homes in France.

Please think of the podencos as well as the galgos.
