Support the small associations – they need help too

Charl Harley eye 250All animal rescue associations in Spain do an amazing job, some of them are lucky enough to have hundreds of supporters to raise funds for their work. Which sadly often pushes out the small associations who lurch from month to month trying to pay feed and vet bills. You’ll know from previous posts on Galgo News that Charl and 112carlotagalgos has worked tirelessly for many years – longer than many larger associations – to raise awareness of the plight of the galgos and podencos. You can read more about the dogs here.

She now has some seriously ill galgos in her care, and the vet bills are mounting up as we speak.

1. Harley – arrived with a seriously damaged eye. He is in the vet clinic now, operated on for the removal of the injured eye. Please pray for the recovery of his eyesight in the good eye. Pray for the swelling of the good eye to go down, and for his enormous pain to ease.

2. Please pray for Prince, rescued in severe malnutrition condition, with leishmania. He is now in the vet clinic with a bad bladder/kidney infection, no appetite and is losing weight (which he seriously cannot afford to do).

3. And there is Emily, a traumatized galga who cries much of the time.

New arrivals Sol and Star, not yet a year old and chucked out by their galguero, Mozart and Tigra, two young galgos in poor condition – galgos thrown over the fence into the garden of a friend, which Charl has taken in – even though there’s hardly room. And Sam and Sallie, two young galgos also seriously underweight.

Charl Tigra 250 5 2013Please think of these small associations who don’t cry out that they are likely to close if they don’t get thousands of euros….These small associations like 112carlotagalgos are the ones who give the individual care and rehabilitation. Hopefully all these galgos will finally return to good health and be ready for forever homes.

Just for starters, this is the story of Mozart who arrived at the finca yesterday.

Charl Mozart 250 5 2013I’m just a young pup of approx 1 year old. I was found in the river bed of dry dust, the local common place for dumping canines like me! I’ve never ever felt more alone, despite having been in an unsure past. I was never treated greatly, in fact harsh and cruel, I tried not to moan or complain, but it wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t good enough.

So alone I lay, on cardboard for a bed, amongst the dust and dirt. With fleas for friends. They didn’t abandon me. But they sure made me itch! I didn’t know the score or how to be, so I decided to lay and see what’s what. A man drove by and stopped, he saw me there, but I wasn’t going to care. I’D GIVEN UP ! You see, what’s left for a galgo such as me? I lifted my weary head just a week ago, and he walked over, I didn’t bother because I thought what’s another rod, or beating. A man’s a man, right? Not this time, the kind man scooped me up, placed me into his car. Off we went to the vet where my tail had such mass infection it had to be cut. They’ve brought me here to finca 112 carlota galgos, they tell me it’s here I will learn to be a galgo, and play. ‘Ill always be grateful to the kind man who stopped, and took me home. Cared for me and fed me 4 meals a day and now I’m ready… Negative in leishmania, erlichea, filaria. Just need a few preparations and ‘Ill be looking for a forever. That’s what the galgos tell me here happens … So here I am, if you can love me? Lets make music.. My name’s Mozart.

So sad for these poor boys and girls, but I know they are in the best hands with Charl and 112carlotagalgos. Hang on in there babies – it will all come good in the end. Charl and all the others at rescues everywhere do such fantastic work for the galgos and podencos – no words can ever truly express what a difference these people make to the lives of these precious dogs. We will do our best on Sunday for Charl and the dogs with the help of our fat galgo/pod Gandalf!

I am thinking of Harley and his poor eyes, hoping that Prince gets well and thinking of poor Emily and all the other galgos in Charl’s care. It is wonderful what she has done for them. I am going to buy a print from Martin Usborne’s site, ‘a year to help’. The print is called ‘a heart for Prince’ and all proceeds go to Carlotagalgos. There are some lovely prints of the galgos on the site. I hope the fundraising event goes well, with the help of Gandalf! That is a great thing to do.

Charl and other small rescues do marvellous work! i cant donate at present but have done before and will do again. I was a bit annoyed that I donated quite large sums to an organisation last year, thinking i was helping to fund a new shelter which would help many dogs over many years, only to find it has all trickled away on helping a few individual dogs over the short term and now there is no help for all the future dogs needing help. of course these needed help and great things were done for them, and I would have donated to them but also to others such as 112 carlottagalgos who also help so many. I would still have not bothered, just got on with helping where I could, but I was appalled at the vicious personal attacks on someone who asked a perfectly valid question about the large sum which was raised last year to provide longterm help to the galgos and no longer exists, not does the help. i will reserve my help now for the small rescues who are completely straight about what they are appealing for and where sums raised go, and who have no need to attack anyone who asks valid straightforward questions. Good luck and positive thoughts for Harley, Mozart and the other poor galgos here, and i will help again in future

We had a brilliant day fundraising and Gandalf was a little star. Plus we had a visit from REY another 112Carlotagalgos galgo who helped raise the profile of these wonderful dogs. We raised a good sum for Charlotte, who will receive the lions share of fundraising, and we’ve decided to send a smaller donation to another small rescue. Plus a good friend and greyhound volunteer came (despite having a broken arm and shoulder) to make a fantastic donation for 112Carlotagalgos!

That’s brilliant news and it’s great what you have done for both rescues. I’m really glad that you had a good day. I hope Gandalf and Rey enjoyed it, bet they got lots of attention!
