  • Are galgos carriage hounds?

Carriage training galgos 3 190The Junta in Andalucia had no regard for the health and well being of galgos when they rescinded the law banning hounds being trained from motorised vehicles – whether vans, 4×4, quad bikes, motorbike. This ignoramus would have got round the ban anyway…can you believe this?!! How close are those galgos to the carriage wheels! They don’t stand a chance if he puts the horse into trot!!! I’d like to rope him to the back of that cart….seen in the area of Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville!

You may just be able to see there are 3 dogs – the chain of the white one in the middle is going over the carriages leaf springs, and the only way for that poor dog to get on the inside again is to get right beside that carriage wheel!

  • Greyhounds/Galgos make superb Theraphy dogs.

My first greyhound had such a superb temperament that she became a PAT dog…Pets As Therapy…in the UK and regularly visited an old folks’ home to spend time with the residents, especially those who had been dog owners but couldn’t have a dog in the home.

Here is a lovely story about a Spanish Galga who is doing a similar job – but this time in New Mexico in a prison.

  • Handicapped Galgo Polar – diary notes

1 4 2013 Polar Alan 2 250For those of you who followed the story of disabled galgo puppy Polar – abandoned at the gates of Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville at 2 months old, here’s a update on his life at present, 2 years after he arrived to join our canine gang. (Photo of him nursing Alan Brian after heart problems)

He still doesn’t know he is handicapped on his rear left leg joint. He evinces no sign of pain and can run faster than the other 2 galgos…in straight lines! However, Bracken (with 4 good legs) can turn corners much quicker! He has a small scoop of MSM each day, is still collecting ASBOs – last night he destroyed one of the foam beds a friend made for the dogs to lie on the terrasse in the sunshine!

  • Educating galgueros – Pepis Refuge, Seville

Pepis visit hunter 2 250 2015Even with 75 dogs to care for 24/7 and a pregnant galga just rescued after being abandoned and running loose in the village, and about to produce babies, Jane and Alan of Pepis Refuge made time to visit a local hunter. Here Jane explains.

‘As part of our ongoing effort to be involved in the world of the Galgos and the Galgueros in our area, we were invited to go and see a local Galguero and his dogs. He was very proud to show us the food he prepares them every day, which consisted of pasta, vegetables, meat and bread, with a supplement of vitamins which we saw cooking as we were there.

His dogs have a large compound with individual sleeping compartments, spotlessly clean. His dogs are micro chipped, vaccinated and tattooed on the ear. For security reasons he has a vault door filled with concrete and thick walls as some of the Galgos are from champions and to him are priceless, he has dogs of over 7 years of age that he won’t part with.

  • Reality of life for a Spanish Galgo

Charl dead galgo 250 8 1 2015Two galgos found, one already dead. Charl del Rio tells the story.

A shameful existence of pain and horror. This poor poor couple of galgos… life is hard, dark, and cold .. this is the reality faced by many many many thousands of galgos. How many are out there tonight? Under the cold cold night and cold cold hands. Souls frozen .. owned by the devil himself.

This is the story of reality. This is why we must all stand together and be strong. Be stronger. Firmer hand in hand we must fight and we must must win. For every soul out there needs protection and a voice.

  • Emergency appeal for donations for injured galga in Cadiz

Charl Cadiz galga 250Charl del Rio of 112carlotagalgos received an urgent call today from a young woman in a village near Cadiz where she found this young galga with an horrendous back wound. The girl is staying with the galga whilst Charl organises for her to go straight to her vet in Malaga. Here’s what Charl says.

‘The rescue train has begun. Confirmed a female but bleeding a lot. So we have been in touch with a contact in Cadiz who has offered to go quickly and pick her up and bring her. We will meet up and head to the clinic. This is a nasty nasty wound which doesn’t look too old but in 40 degree heat infection and fever can set in very quickly. The girl who caught her tells me shes plagued with flies naturally and cooked flesh is not an easy thing to heal in this heat. So a little blind on whats coming in but we will do our absolute best.

  • Galga Zoe, left for dead – now in her forever home

Charl Zoe 250Tribute to Zoe – by Charlotte del Rio

    Dear Sr.Galguero

I was sitting here with my thoughts, looking back over time.
Just a mere girl I was at your feet, the foot that booted me regularly. I wondered when the day would be, when I’d be free from the shame I felt.

I wandered by your side Sr.Galguero as a good galga should and on many occasion I know you thought you broke me. You almost did!

At just a year old I’d been born into hell, I knew nothing more than the life I led. Shamed, doomed, and hollow. Fear striking me at every move. How I lived on my nerves .. Oh how I did.
