I’ve received the following from Mieke van Erp, to share with you. Many rescue associations are already up in arms about it.
‘This is where the money goes from The EU! There is checked in Spain and it is true but there are very few schools who want to learn the children how to hunt. So the money goes to the galgueros! I am copying some recent news about the other Spanish mafia (the other being the bullfighting one), the hunting fraternity, which will shock you I´m sure. This comes again from the unspeakable Junta de Castilla y Léon where they hold, among many other horrors, the Toro de la Vega and where the PSOE (political party from the left, not that it makes any difference) wants to subsidize all blood fiestas, this when people in Spain are going hungry and losing their homes in a fast downward economic spiral to hell.
Another society putting pressure on the EU to take action on animal cruelty
One of the things which I find really frustrating is how much back biting goes on between refuges and associations, whether in Spain, Belgium, France…… At the end of the day, for me, it is about the dogs, who cares who is ‘president’ of which association, who runs what refuge so long as it complies with GEE. For goodness sake, it’s about the animals, not about people and politics….
I was in a car park in Spain and where a little puppy, probably about 5 months old, looked like a x poodle, was wandering around loose. I went to take it up when a couple of young Spanish restrained me. It was their puppy, they said. As I don’t speak Spanish, I was unable to answer them as I would have liked to. I dread to think of how it ended up…certainly not microchipped, vaccinated and in a loving family home….more likely in a shelter, if it hadn’t been killed by a lorry driving into the car park.
This is the link to ESDAW, a new organisation formed at the beginning of 2011 to work on getting European law on animal protection enforced across all member states. Their vice president lives near to me, so I am looking forward to meeting her and discussing how we can put more pressure on both the EU – and in my case Spain – to help make a difference. I like to think that we will provide support in this area which the marvellous volunteers, associations and refuges in Spain – and across Europe – do not always have the time to devote, as they daily cope with the overwhelming pressure of dealing with abandoned, sick and injured dogs.

A reader in the UK has taken up the plight of the galgos in Spain with her MEP. Derek Vaughan, one of the Labour MEP’s for Wales has replied that he ‘was very concerned about the problem and has tabled a Written Question to the Commission to bring it to wider attention and see what can be done to help end this unnecessary suffering’.
Derek Vaughan needs the support of as many other MEPs as possible. Please write to your MEP and ask them to support the Written Question. Below is a sample letter which is a variation of the one to the president of the European Commission already on Galgo News.
