UK Campaign to ban betting on dogs and greyhound racing
Last Monday after months of planning between LUSH and greyhound protection groups the ‘Don’t Bet On It’ campaign launched itself into UK High Streets and Shopping Malls and UK shoppers were greeted with this message nationwide. At midday on 18th October 2010 the campaign went live online and LUSH issued hundreds of press releases to the national media and at long last a major UK company endorsed our cause and were prepared to promote and support the campaign to end the betting on dogs and commercial greyhound racing.

Saved from death in Spain – galgas rehomed by GRIN in America
Telma Shaw and Wally Lacey of GRIN in the US recently travelled to Spain to visit volunteers with galgo and podenco rescue associations and refuges, and to take back with them four dogs which had been offered forever homes in the US. Here’s what Telma says.
‘ We are back!! An amazing trip meeting tons of people and visiting
shelters, boarding facilities, a huge new project/kennel for the galgos near
Sevilla (more news on that) and we brought back three galgos…..the sad news is that we had to leave Angie at Madrid airport because on the way from Valencia to Madrid, Silvie the other galga started barking up a storm and got Angie all agitated to the point of panic, biting the crate, bleeding, temp increased, panting terrible, heart palpatations etc etc..we had to wet her down and let her sit with us and it took her an hour to calm down..we could not in good conscience continue the trip to the US. -
Greyhound Industry in Freefall – galgo hunting and racing next?

You’ve heard of buy one get one free – well we have that with dogs” says Gordon Bissett – Head of Ladbrokes Greyhound Stadia
Mr Bissett appeared blissfully unaware his ‘viewpoint’ on the decline of greyhound racing would be placed in the public domain – the contents of which are not only very encouraging for the greyhounds but also for those who serve to protect them.’

Pregnant galga, abandoned on the streets of Cordoba – please help
One of the things which really sickens me and also makes me exceedingly angry is the abandonment of animals – everywhere. I receive many emails containing appeals for help for abandoned animals, or mass cullings of stray dogs or wild mustangs. The reason there are so many unwanted animals is because of MAN, as in human. If there were not people like breeders of animals, dog and horse shows, circuses – to name just a few – there would not be the need for refuges and rescue associations.
This is yet another example of irresponsibility and lack of care – a galga abandoned on the streets of Cordoba, prey to any dog which scents her when she comes into season. The result, she is still wandering the streets of Cordoba, heavily pregnant and about to give birth to yet more unwanted dogs.

Spain’s Catalonia bans bullfighting.
The result of 68 in favour, 55 against the prohibition was expected, since the Catalonian parliament had cast preliminary votes in December accepting a citizens’ petition to outlaw bullfighting on the grounds that it was cruelty to animals. There were nine abstentions.

A Belfast family whose beloved pet dog has been seized because of this law, spoke with Animal campaigner and singer Maria Daines and she has written an article on the subject in K9 magazine, which you can read here.

Action needed by the EC on enforcing improved animal welfare conditions in Europe
The following is a report from the Eurogroup for Animals in respect of animal welfare conditions in Europe.
‘The European Parliament has called on the European Commission to take clear action to improve the welfare conditions of animals throughout the course of its current mandate. Voting overwhelmingly in favour of Marit Paulsen’s report on the Evaluation and Assessment of the Animal Welfare Action Plan 2006-2010, MEPs signalled that they would like to see measures put in place to develop, implement and enforce animal welfare legislation.
