On the 2oth Febuary 2011 on Antena 3 News. A story hit the headlines about Galgueros.
Its a dark world for the Spanish Galgo no matter what, no matter where, in the hands of the hunter the galgo can become the hunted. We talk about theft and the dangers that can over come a galgo, but hitting the headlines is in favour of our 4 legged friend. However, what I saw just goes to show, it has only got the name of a hunting dog.
The galguero hit the news because he had been robbed 12 times, galgos reaching the value of 50.000 Euros, so he built a bunker below his house. There we saw the galgos, kept in the dark – well the light was on, but when the metal door slams down, its a dark world. Each galgo on a cold cement floor, no bed. A chain around their mouths and head, like a horses headcollar. The galgos were in condition, however one didnt even rasie its head while it was hitting the headlines and his Galguero owner on Tv .. The galgo being famous, unaware completely. Not a mention of “what are the chains around its mouth?” No bed,.. there were many a step down into the bunker, and the metal re-enforced door slid upward to open. I can only imagine what the Galgos hear when the steps of their galguero are heard, the door opening.
Not everyone keeps their dogs as we do, and the story hit the headlines to show people how dangerous theft can be for the galgo…
Breaking headlines.. but terribly terribly sad in every respect.

Absolutely, sickening, and what horror these dogs
must be suffering…………….and no one in authority goes in and stops
it!

Trouble is, Jen, the whole bloody legal system is
corrupt, as are the regional and municipal politicians who could put an end to
it – many of them are hunters…………. They are the people we have to
convince that they do Spain and the majority of Spaniards a great disservice
against the image of the country worldwide.
Easier said than done, those on the ground in Spain
will tell you.
But we have to keep trying.
