  • Galgo Phoenix with Galgos Rescue Almeria – hoping for a forever home

    GRA galga broken leg vet 400 1 6 223
From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

‘At the beginning of July, these 2 hounds Tracy & Phoenix had an appointment at the vet for a general checkup and vaccinations.

When these sweethearts arrived at Galgo’s Rescue Almeria they urgently needed immediate surgery. The traumatologist performed emergency surgery on Tracy’s upper leg on her right hind leg.

With Phoenix it was the elbow on the left front leg. For him it was waiting patiently that he recovered completely and that his leg could be saved as he had been wandering around with his fracture for weeks.

But today we look back with satisfaction on the work our vets at La Seda have done.

Both sweethearts are now ready for the next step in their lives going to a forever home.

  • Appalling Greyhound abuse in the UK – as bad as the Spanish – take action now

    Rebecca Perkins starved greyhound 400 6 2023
CAGED Nationwide is an organisation fighting to get all the greyhound racing tracks in the UK shut down – they expose much of the horrific maltreatment suffered by greyhounds. This is one of the latest stories to hit the headlines. The murderess received 36 weeks in jail!!!!

‘We are now able to share with you that less that 24hours after winning the public vote at Holyrood Dog of the Year, Joy’s last trainer Rebecca Perkins has been JAILED for three counts of ANIMAL CRUELTY and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

This came after Ms Perkins, a GBGB (Greyhound Racing Board of Great Britain) licensed trainer, abandoned around 40 greyhounds in her GBGB registered kennels and left them to starve to death. Many were found dead alongside living, but emaciated greyhounds. Several dogs had to be put to sleep immediately as they could not be saved, and others like Joy, face a life of rehabilitation. We cannot imagine what suffering those dogs endured under her so-called care. Despite barbarically losing her leg, Joy is one of the lucky ones who survived the racing industry and Rebecca Perkins.

  • Kong filler ideas for our dog

Kongs are a good way of keeping an active dog occupied, especially if left alone for a while. Here’s a link to some recommended ideas from the Blue Cross.

  • Monday morning with the feel good factor

    From Galgos del Sol.

Monday mornings are always tough so lets start with a feel good video. Fandolia could have died if not rescued as she was in respitory distress. With kennel cough and pneumonia we had to watch her carefully. She’s waiting to go to her new home and in the meantime shes at the retirement home helping with the vege patch. She’s a very good judge of vegetable I must say! Now Fandolia can breathe again, life is better!

  • Leishmania in dogs

Many of the Spanish rescue hounds test positive for Leishmania, a disease caused by the Sandfly. Sadly it puts some people off adopting, and yet with an inexpensive regular dose of medication, the dogs go on to lead happy normal lives.

Here’s a link to an article about Leishmania which I published a couple of years ago.

  • Traktive – finding your dog if it gets lost

A story recently published tells of a podenco on a beach with its owner in Northern France. Some fireworks were let off and the podenco ran into the sea and swam off. It was wearing one of these trackers. The owner says the GPS signal was lost for about an hour, then reappeared to report that the dog had swum out to an island and was on rocks waiting to be rescued! She got a local boat owner to take her out to the Island to rescue her dog.

So here’s a link to Traktive, the tracker this lady used. I shall be purchasing one for my podenca Rosie for when we go out on riverbank and beach walks, as she’s still so nervous she’d probably run off if there were any loud bangs.

    Here’s what Tina says.

‘He was covered in acid and endured terrifying pain. Now he’s happy but just these last bits are not healing’.
