  • Galgo Racing in Argentina and Uruguay – banned! Chile is next on the list!

    Argentina galgo 400
Proyecto Galgo Argentina reports some very good news.

’27/12/2018 today is a very happy day for all of us who love greyhounds. The President of Uruguay 🇺🇾 Tabaré Vazquez sent a project to ban races to Congress, but in case that was not fundamental, by decree immediately prohibits races in that country. Thank you to everyone who achieved this, and especially to Aptéha-Asociación Por el Trato Ético Hacia los Animales that through the campaign Galgo Libre uy never lowered their arms!!!
Thank you thank you from Argentina!!

  • Invisible fencing? The Whole Dog Journal writes

I recently received an email from someone considering adopting a Podenco and asking if invisible fencing would be suitable. He already used it on his other dog. Rather than respond with just my own view – hate the product!! – I posted the question on my facebook podenco pages and Podenco Post. Not surprisingly the 100% response was resounding NO and in some countries like Scandinavia and the UK it is illegal.

Coincidentally an article on the subject arrived in my Inbox this morning. You can read the full article on this link.

  • Facts and Fiction about Greyhounds and Galgos

World Galgo day galgo asleep 400
Sunday 3rd February is World Galgo Day. Here’s what Mo Swatek says about greyhounds and galgos.

    GREYHOUNDS EXISTED BEFORE THE GALGOS

Actually its the other way around. Galgos were before greyhounds. Phoenicians brought them from Egypt to the Mediterranean coast. From there they came to northern Spain where Celtic tribes took them up north to the UK.

GREYHOUNDS WERE MENTIONED IN THE BIBLE

That is most possible not the case and if , it was a middle eastern sighthound and not a greyhound. Here a very good explanation…

Although galgos and greyhounds have a reputation as 40mph couch potatoes, we also know they can run – fast! Many years ago before Galgos del Sol was formed, Tina Solera ran a Canicross in Spain with her rescued Galgo Guapo, to publicise the galgos as companion dogs.

Many galgos are now homed in Scotland and here are a couple of websites involved in galgos and greyhound adoption, plus one lady who does Canicross with her 2 greyhounds and a podenco!

  • Yo Galgo – publicising the plight of the Spanish galgo

    Yo Galgo 400 11 1 2019
‘Let’s say that the weekend has begun OK, time to watch or re-watch our documentary (half price using the code yogalgo, link https://vimeo.com/r/2gsf/U3lBSll4Zm). As some of you know, every year thousands of Spanish greuhounds are abandoned or killed after the hunting season, which is close, and nothing will change unless we unite the international public opinion to pressure Spain into changing and enforcing the laws affecting the hunting dogs.

The myxomatosis virus (the one that killed 500 million rabbits in the span of two years in Australia) has just jumped to the Iberian hare, which could go extinct. The lack of hares means no more sport for the hunters, so they are abandoning galgos as I´ve never seen before. The fight is so important that we sent 50% discount codes to all the shelters we know, hoping they share our story so their followers understand how important this is. We have sent more than a thousand emails (covering many countries). Who knows, so far Yo Galgo has been watched in 44 countries.’

  • Podenco Friends and 5 rescued galgos

    Bev 5 galgos 2 400
Bev farmer is known for her tireless work with rescued podencos. But occasionally a galgo crosses her path. Here’s her story of 5.

‘On 9th January we took in 5 male galgos. They are a voluntary hand over from their Galguero, not living in the best of conditions but in fairness all 5 dogs are in a reasonable state. A lot of superficial cuts and bite marks, just one that had a serious laceration that needed attention. Thanks to Friends of Mazarron Animals who are working with local Galgueros.

Due to an outbreak of myxomatosis in hares in a number of regions in Spain, hunting has been suspended in some areas, the galgueros no longer want the dogs and are agreeing to hand them over to rescues.

Many thanks to Dee N, Ste Hargreaves, Steve.. Dee..Val..Falk..Jane..Keith who transported them up yesterday to our vets and stayed with us whilst all the dogs were blood tested and vaccinated. Then helped to take them to Finca la Castellana were they are in residence until we have space to bring them to us
