  • Spanish galgueros – the curse of Spain

    Avila hung galgo 5 400
Story from the Protectora in Avila

    ‘Hope is never lost.

Once again impotence, indignation and anger fills the hearts of members of animals in distress and of all animal defenders. On 16th January a notice from a village of ávila (SAN VICENTE DE ARÉVALO) warns us that they have found a galgo hanging and dying in a pine forest, what person can do such a savagery? Leave a living being hanging to die in slow agony.

We urgently contacted the town hall and spoke with the seprona to try to locate it; the area patrol at all times tried to help us.

Apparently, it had already come to the notice and been brought to the attention of the mayor of the area, who took as a solution(the next day!!!!) the next day to call the vet to proceed to eutanasia. So the poor galgo spent the night where he was found.

At 11 p. M in full field and without exact location, as the councilman of that town, was warned and did not want to leave his home so he could get the animal out of there to a safe place; it was not a job Simple, but it was urgent to try to locate him and see how he was. A person of our protectoar moved quickly to that town and with the indications received by the mayor and the help of the civil guard managed to find the galgo. Yeah, “for a change” was a galgo again.

We found the poor animal almost dead, with an eye burst from drowning and neck bleeding. Although the image that we show you is a little harsh, we want to record the cruelty of this act. The poor animal couldn’t stand.

  • 12 years in the rain and cold – Association Baasgalgo to the rescue

    Baas galgo 400 8 1 2018
So many associations now only use facebook when publicising their work…so I have to trawl their pages to find out what is going on. The founder of Association Baasgalgo, Sandra Baas, moved to the USA a few years ago where she set up a branch but her work in Spain continues with Miguel in charge. Here’s a sad story which occurs all to often…

‘When an image is worth more than a thousand words…

This is all Margarita had to get out of the rain and the cold… 12 years tied to a chain, 12 years of misery…

Our volunteer Eva was able to get her and she is now in one of our shelters while waiting for that home that she deserves so much in retirement, hopefully for her the best in the world.

  • To crate or not to crate a dog?

Interesting article on how to teach your dog to use a crate. Apart from transporting dogs in vehicles/planes or possibly a dog shows, I am not a believer in using crates otherwise…particularly ‘toilet training’ a dog. I have had dogs all of my 70 years and have never had problems toilet training a dog without resorting to a crate. I knew one woman who crated her Weimaraners whenever I visited because she couldn’t control them! In my book, that was because they weren’t trained to behave. On another occasion I was told by a third party that a galgo I had rehomed was being crated and the children allowed to poke fingers at him! He was fine with the children and other dog when I did home tests/checks…to this day I don’t know why she crated him…I didn’t ask because I was so angry! Needless to say, I simply messaged that he was to be brought back to me immediately. Was fine with the grandchildren in his thereafter forever home.

We all have our own opinions on this subject, these are simply mine.

  • Deanimals in Murcia – always fighting for animal welfare

    DeAnimals logo 400
I’ve written in the past about Deanimals of Murcia, the lawyers who take on prosecution cases of animal welfare and run training courses for lawyers, police, judges, veterinarians and anyone else involved with animals, training them to carry on in all corners of Spain the work Deanimals pioneered. Founding lawyer Raquel tells me she now has many lawyers doing similar work around Spain and the Canary Islands.

This story is about an aspect of their work…it’s not about galgos, it’s about circus animals. I have always abhorred the use of animals in circus, especially ‘wild animals’…travelling all over the place, in cramped conditions, being forced to perform unnatural acts.

There was outrage in Paris recently when a rare white tiger from a circus was shot dead after escaping from its prison. my research shows that in October 2015 France had no ban on wild animals in travelling circuses, of which there are many in France. Further research now states there are 65 communes in France which ban wild animals in circuses. Sadly the one in which I live in 79, and surrounding communes, does not.

  • Scooby Protectora – their work never ends…please support them

    Scooby galgo puppy 400 17 12 2017
This month there are more galgos arriving at the Scooby shelter, several dogs in very poor condition or with health problems, this 4-month old puppy and another tiny abandoned puppy with rickets in its front legs…needing medicine and special food.

Here’s one of the galgos, malnourished and full of wounds. How can anyone let a dog get in this state?! And galgueros claim to love their dogs!!

When he recovers will need a family that will care him as he deserves and give him a lot of love ❤.

Greyhounds in Need was founded by Anne Finch in 1996…GIN also help the galgos of Spain. There are also Greyhounds in Nood Belgium – some lovely photos on their website, Greyhound Rescue Holland, PetLevrieri Italy, to name just a few countries which adopt galgos and podencos.

Story of a happy ending for 3 ex-racing greyhounds rescued this month from the Chinese hell and now finding homes in Italy.
