  • Greyhound Rescue Holland – join the adoption team

Greyhounds Rescue Holland is looking for fellow volunteers joined the adoption team.

The adoption team mediates adoption of dogs (greyhounds and podencos) from the Spanish shelters. This means a lot of contact with the prospective adoptive parents and contacts of the Spanish shelters.

Adoption Team volunteer is a tough job that depends intensity in terms of the number of applications running adoption. It is important that the work between the members of the adoption team is well distributed and that consulted regularly via whats app and phone.

But asking volunteers to make a house call to potential adopters, assessing adoption applications and decide on part of this task.

  • Pepis Dog Refuge – desperate call for donations

    One word…..HELP!!💔

Apologies from Jane at Pepis Dog Refuge for not posting much this week but as you will see it’s been a tough one. Probably one of the worst yet. Anyone following this page will of seen Kiora, the Galga that was recently dumped and shortly after died of an unknown illness. Well sadly, the illness is still unknown and it’s rampaging it’s way through the refuge. We currently have 3 dogs at the vets, 2 in the refuge hospital on drips and several more showing signs of coming down with it. We are praying at the moment they will all survive it.

Regardless, this is going to result in a MASSIVE vet bill. We obviously can’t quote it yet as at the moment we have no idea how many more are going to need treatment. If you can donate ANY amount it would be a great help.

    PayPal is pepis.dogrefuge@yahoo.co.uk

Sadly Jane has reported today that galga Faith has died.

  • Polar’s Diary – what has be been up to?

Head 2 400It’s been a while since I updated on happenings in Polar’s Diary – but that doesn’t mean he has been quiet! He’s been getting his nose in all sorts of forbidden places…such as dog food when the door was left open and turkey joint when it wasn’t put in the fridge! He continues to charm and delight everyone who meets him. Since September he has been going back to school – his sit, stay, recall are excellent – when there isn’t a pheasant in sight! And recently he took part in an obedience demonstration at the open day of a local Agricultural College.

He is a veritable shadow – soon as I move from a chair he is by my side, his head fits nicely into my hand by my side! He enjoys watching documentaries where there are animals involved, Paul O’Grady at Battersea, Alan Davies and the RSPCA dogs. And this weekend Scruffts! (see bottom 2 pix)

He still likes to perch on the chairs and recently worked out how to get himself onto David’s lap for a snooze! We’re careful to make sure his damaged knee is comfy.

  • Uncontrolled breeding of galgos in Spain – estimated figures

Guardia C@ivil starved galga 400 25 2 2017At last someone else got the figure right. I’ve been saying nearer 100,000 every year since I looked at the figures back in 2015 for my presentation at the PAES conference.

    Let’s look at the figures.

Estimated ANNUAL figures for uncontrolled breeding of galgos.

Back in the early 1990’s, a friend of mine who was a Daily Mail staff photographer, was visiting the Castila-la Mancha province. His guide walked him into an olive grove where he photographed the olive trees, many of which had a dead galgo hanging from them, which made headlines in the paper.
In 2009 SOS Galgos (Barcelona) claimed on their website that 160 galgos were abandoned every day.
