Near death rescue in Romania
I first wrote about galgos in Romania some 5 years ago, and last September there was the threat that Romania would open a greyhound racing stadium. Recent reports suggest it has not so far come to fruition. Here is a story about a galgo/greyhound in Romania, luckily now rescued and receiving care and treatment in a vet clinic.
This dog was spotted about 2 weeks ago on a field, between 2 villages. He seemed to be weaken, he was scared and would not allow people near him. A friend of ours saw him every evening and tried to get close but the dog wouldn’t have it. About a week ago, she managed to catch the dog and take him straight to the vet clinic, he was so weak and hungry that he was eating dry grass on that field.

Industrial Washing Machine Needed at Pepis Dog Refuge
Can you imagine washing dog bedding and dog coats for over 70 dogs – in a normal household domestic washing machine?!! Nightmare! This is what Jane Brian is having to use at the moment. It only takes 4 blankets at a time. Volunteer Laura Savill has started fundraising for a industrial machine but needs help. The machine will cost 2000 euros, at the moment just over 300 euros have been raised. It would be lovely if by June (2016) enough money is raised so that Jane can purchased the machine and start washing in style and the blanket mountain goes down.
You can either donate by using paypal pepis.dogrefuge@yahoo.co.uk or by bank transfer which can be found through the website Pepisdogrefuge.com
Thanks in anticipation – Laura

Galgos in Spain – welcome to the 21st Century
Video about the reality of life for the galgos of Spain. Since I first became involved in publicising this nightmare for the hounds nearly 10 years ago, not a lot has changed! The hunters, especially in rural areas, continue to maltreat their dogs and dump them at the end of the hunting season. However, one change is that fewer are now hung…instead they are abandoned in the campo, left tied to gates of refuges and dumped in perreras for killing – this is because the hunters now know the world is aware of their behaviour and that there are so many rescue associations now taking the dogs for rehoming.
Will we ever convince them to stop over-breeding and to keep their dogs from one year to the next? We have to keep trying.

Yo Galgo – film about the Spanish Galgo
Here is a taster about a film being made on the life and treatment of the Spanish galgo. It’s through kickstarter, which raises money to fund finishing the film. The amount needed has already been raised and surpassed, so you don’t need to donate. Just watch the film, and see the attitude of the Spanish galguero!
