  • Giving rescue dogs a chance

Not about galgos or Spanish hounds but I thought you might be interested to read this story of a young woman in Romania (where we know the dogs also suffer horrendous cruelty) and her work saving the street dogs.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – Galga Delia with Filaria

    GRA Delia 3 2022 400
    From Galgos Rescue Almeria.

‘Delia arrived at our Shelter a few weeks ago. This sweet girl had such a sad look in her eyes. After a checkup and a blood test, it turned out at first sight that Dalia had Filaria (heart worm). Again a blood sample was taken for laboratory research, unfortunately this also turned out to be positive for Filaria. This disease can be treated if caught on time and with the right medication.

We have started her treatment. The first weeks are a cocktail of pills and during the treatment she has to receive 3 injections.

  • SOS Galgos Barcelona – working with student osteopaths

Many years ago I had the pleasure of visiting SOS Galgos in Barcelona. They are another long established galgo and podenco rescue association, working with the late Anne Finch to close down the Barcelona canododrome in 1996. Recently they were visited by student osteopaths to work on their rescued galgos.

‘Last week we had a special day at the Centre for our galgos. Students training to become osteopaths for animals, who are in their third year of training came and worked their magic on our needy galgos. At first they didnt know what to think of it but then they relaxed and you could tell they felt so relaxed and just let go and enjoyed their sessions.

Thank you I.F.O.A. for making this happen and thanks to Javi who came to film the session to include in a video in the making which we share with you.

  • Galgos 112 – 2 more abandoned galgos now safe

    Galgos 112 400 1 3 2022
    From Galgos 112

‘We had a very bad month of March, we didn’t stop picking up galgos that have been abandoned.

These two beauties were this week picked up in the same village. Agnes, the black one, was on a roundabout near the entrance to the highway and was easily caught. Ashley, the brindle one, couldn’t resist the smell and, despite limping on one leg and almost not standing up due to pain, she came and was caught by the smell of aa plastic bag with food.

They are already out of danger, today the vet will see them and we will know what happens in that paw.

If you help us pay for veterinary cost we can continue to help so many in need.

  • Galgos en Familia – helping Galga Libia to a better life

    From Galgos en Fakilia.

    ‘NEW LIFE FOR LIBIA

Today we ask for your help, to give Libya a new life.

As we tell you Libya came to our shelter after a lifetime of real suffering, came with one of her broken legs, something that suppose to be constant pain and a lice for life in the best of cases and no, we could not allow the constant suffering of Libya, we had to look for options, that guarantee a future and a worthy life.

Our specialist in trauma, after studying her case and doing the necessary tests, told us that the solution was to operate and so our girll has been operated on, they have rebuilt her paw, putting plates and screws in it, which will make her able to walk again, in addition to ending her constant pain.

PACMA podencos Castilla la Mancha 400 3 2022
This is a weblink to introduce the new team at PACMA, leading the fight to protect Spain’s abused animals.

This is a weblink to an article about the Government of Castilla-La Mancha wanting to promote the violence and cruelty of hunting among young people and women.

Also in March 2022 PACMA urged the Junta de Andalucía to stop promoting, protecting and shielding hunting in the community. We have sent a letter to the Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía to stop their efforts to promote this cruel and violent activity. Weblink to this article.

This is the translation of a PACMA article about dog-fighting in Spain. Galgos are sometimes bred as bait dogs to be used in this cruel and barbaric activity.

  • Separation anxiety in dogs – what to do

    Rosie tout seule 400
My recently adopted podenca Rosely (Rosie) is my shadow. Which is great to a certain extent, but not good when left. I’ve never had a dog with separation anxiety problem, probably because most of my dogs have had companions. However, when Rosie first arrived, she did not have a housemate, so we had the howling and door scratching when left at night. I’ve never allowed dogs in bedrooms but now we’re in a bungalow, I’ve given in and Rosie has a bed at the side of mine for overnight sleeps.

I do a couple of mornings voluntary work with Riding for the Disabled and also an animal charity shop. On both occasions she showed serious signs of distress – luckily my other half was at home with her.

Her new housemate blind Podenco Bo arrived a week later and so over the weeks during the 3 months she has now been with us, she has adjusted to being left with him, although my other half says she sits at the patio doors looking for me. The greeting I get on my return home is wonderful, I must say.

So I’m slowly working on her separation anxiety but can now appreciate what a problem it must be for those people who are not able to have more than one dog.

In Scooby we have never hesitate to help all the animals we could, our friends from Andalucia, Extremadura, Murcia, Castile la Mancha desperately asked us for help for the galgos and podencos, hunting dogs and some mestiz os, all this knowing that from our land we were getting enormous amounts of animals but we could not turn our back on them and now we find that we have about 500 between galgos and podencos, 500 animals that need to eat, need to be cleaned and need treatments see Terinaries, almost 80% of the clinic and hospital work they are for our own animals, castrate them, vaccinate them, various operations, blood tests.

We have had to hire more staff and now we need you, we need to pay the workers, our thought providers, vaccines, bisturics, etc.

We need people who want to organize events to raise funds. At Scooby we have always hesitated to ask for little and now we need it. If you can help us, they will thank you. Plus donations to Scooby are indestructible.
