  • Galgos 112 – saving the abandoned and suffering Spanish hounds

    From Galgos 112

‘Villacarillo… this is how this poor galgo appeared recently. He doesn’t have 1 cm of parasite-free skin.
Poor guy wags his tail to everyone asking for help. It’s already picked up and is with our vet.

Thanks to those who didn’t look away.

  • Why greyhounds & galgos make great pets

We have recently returned to live in the UK, after living in france for 20 years and being involved in trips to Spain to bring rescued galgos and podencos back to France for foster and adoption. We live in a area where there is still a greyhound racing track so there are a few greyhound rescue/rehoming associations for those retiring from the track (I hate the racing, so many dogs get injured) Whilst visiting a National Trust Manor House last weekend, we were delighted to meet 6 greyhounds, all now happily rehomed for their forever lives. There are several galgos rehomed in the area just south of where we live, which I met recently at a Fun Dog Show. We all know they make great pets, so enjoy the video.

  • A hard time

    RIP Pawprints poem 400
Apologies for the lack of news recently. After losing my 8 year old galgo Polar in April to lymphoma, we then lost 13 year old galgo Bracken at the end of July with a tumour on his lungs which was bleeding, and finally on 7th August I said farewell to my 18 year old little Podenca Andaluz Bebe. She had never lived without at least one canine housemate – over the years she supervised the permanent residents plus several fosters. Although she had the start of dementia, losing her sight and hearing, after losing both galgos she gave up on life. So we have lost our last 3 Spanish dogs in 5 months. It’s only in April 2020 we said goodbye to Carmela. It has been a great shock and we are bereft, having lived with dogs all our lives.

We are taking time out to grieve, hence the lack of posts for the last few days. We will foster/adopt again but for the time being we are using the time to visit family and friends around the UK which we haven’t seen for a few years.

Pictured below are Bebe, Bracken, Polar and the bottom photo also includes Carmela and French lurcher Floyd who we lost in 2019.

RIP to our beloved Spanish hounds. You took away pieces of our heart but you will live in our memories for ever.

  • Galgos & greys as therapy dogs

    Pets as Therapy logo 400
Back in 1994 when my first greyhound turned up at our home, as a stray, and no one was adopting greyhounds in those days…Greyhounds In Need was only just getting off the ground. Molly was such a lovely friendly hound that I proposed her as a Pets as Therapy dog. We used to visit a retirement home where she loved meeting the residents, telling their stories of dogs they had owned, and sharing the cake when they had a birthday!

Yo Galgo has made a film about them galgos as therapy dogs.

‘our #6 podcast is out!! It´s open, free, and about a very important topic – Galgos as therapy dogs with Sherry Mangold
Today´s podcast shows us the power of animal companionship, and the possibilities that working with dogs brings to modern medicine. https://www.moonleaks.org/galgos-as-therapy-dogs/

  • Protectora Scooby – please donate for flea & tick treatment

Tick worm treatment credelio plus 400 8 2021
Protectora Scooby have hundreds of rescued dogs and cats in their shelters and desperately need to give them treatment. Here’s what they say.

‘Raising money for Protective and Sanctuary Scooby and your contribution will make a difference regardless of the amount. Any help counts. Thank you for your support. We need to deworm our dogs and cats, both those who are already in the shelter and those who are arriving and as they have to do both external and internally, and it is not the same to do so with 50 animals as with 200. We have sought an effective and very comfortable product for dogs (CREDELIO PLUS) as with a single pill, furry ones are protected for a month from ticks, fleas and gut worms.

When placing the order directly from the supplier, the product comes out more economical but we have a large number of animals and need to raise €2500,00. Can you give us a donation please, no matter how small.

    How to donate, including paypal.

  • RIP Bracken – safe journey across the bridge to your friends

    Bracken face 400
Today we had to say farewell to Bracken. X-ray and endoscopy showed problems in his oesophagus and a tumour in his lungs which was bleeding. On palliative care eventually he was unable to keep food down and we had to take the sad decision to visit the vet.

Bracken came to us 11 years ago from Tina Solera as a 2 year old, rescued with a damaged leg outside a Spanish supermarket. Originally he was just a foster en route to his forever family but, due to a serious change of circumstances he came back to us forever. He loved his walks in the meadows, joining our French lurcher Floyd, galgas Sahara and Carmela, little podenca Bebe and latterly galgo Polar. Apart from Bebe, he has said farewell to the other 4, so now he will join them and share happy memories.

I am concerned for Bebe, she is 18 years old and has never lived without the company of at least one other dog. Having now lost Polar (April) and Bracken (July), we will take a step back before inviting another needy canine into our home. So much grief in such a short space of time.

  • A sad time for galgo Bracken

    Bracken's Diary 400
Eleven years ago galgo Bracken came to us as a foster from Tina Solera at Galgos del Sol. We took him to a lovely home in the UK where he joined their adopted tripod greyhound. Sadly some months later the lady of the house was diagnosed with bone cancer and the consultant advised that the sighthounds be returned. My OH had wanted to adopt Bracken himself so, no more ado, he got in the car and drove to the UK, collected Bracken and brought him home to us. He’s been a wonderful companion, as they all have been, joining the gang and especially loving the fun with his best buddy Polar.

Over the last 4 years he has said farewell to French lurcher Floyd, galgas Sahara and Carmela, then inJvanuary we moved to live in the UK, bringing Bracken, Polar and Bebe. In April this year he said farewell to Polar, from lymphoma, leaving just himself and little Podenca Bebe, 18 years old.
