  • Spain – Making an Official Complaint about animal abuse or abandonment

PLEASE SHARE: HOW TO MAKE AN OFFICIL COMPLAINT FOR ANIMAL ABUSE OR ABANDONMENT IN SPAIN
    MO SWATEK·FRIDAY, 30 JUNE 2017

Due to the complete denial by the authorities (politicians of all levels) of the massive existence of animal abuse in Spain, our only possibility to make a difference is to report ALL and each of the cases that we see.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of cases are reported exclusively on the internet/social media but not to the authorities like the Spanish animal welfare police SEPRONA or directly to court, and the result is obvious. As nobody reports, the official statistics don’t include any of the severe cases all of us find nearly daily. Neither are all the dogs that shelters without subsidies and private people collect daily in the Spanish streets considered in official statistics.

  • Volunteering at a rescue shelter – ground rules to remember!

ACTIN galga Aysha 400It will soon be the end of 2016 and thoughts will turn to holidays in 2017. Regular readers will know I suggest that volunteering at an animal refuge is a wonderful way to spend a week – but there are some ground rules which need to be born in mind. It’s not actually a holiday as such – cleaning kennels, feeding dogs, washing bedding…but there is always time off to do sightseeing, or just play with the dogs!

Most volunteers know this; many return year on year to their preferred refuge whilst others like to go to a different area and meet different people. But the ground rules remain the same!

    1. Remember that the people who own/run the refuge are the ones there 24/7 365 days a year and know the dogs in their care inside out. They know their characters, likes and dislikes, which dogs get on with others, or not.

    2. Do not question any instructions relating to the care of the dogs – helpful suggestions will be considered.

    3. Dogs like routine, refuges run on routine, so please adhere to the daily routine of the refuge wherever possible – obviously if bad weather hits and it’s all hands on deck, then carry out the emergency tasks asked of you.

  • How many dogs can you legally keep?

Thought I would ask the question, in view of the recent post about ‘Types of Hoarder’. Here are some of the replies I received.

In Switzerland: Dog owners have to pay a yearly fee for each dog, depending on weight. In addition the owner must attend a dog school to learn to handle his dog, and do that with each dog he owns. This is all registered at the City hall (ayuntamiento)

In California they pay $29 per greyhound per year, in some townships you are only allowed 2 dogs, in others 4 dogs – it varies a lot.

In Germany, it costs 170 Euro for the first dog, twice that for the second….. But, how many citizens follow the law and register their dogs.

  • Euthanised animals – dangerous waste

Have you ever wondered what happens to the carcasses of dogs and cats killed in the Spanish perreras? Actin Association in Murcia have been carrying out an investigation which included the rescue of a couple of galgos, and an offshoot of this has raised the question. They desperately need funds to pay their lawyers, please donate.

Tunde Patko, who currently lives in Germany but has also lived elsewhere in the world, has been looking into the subject.

  • Tale of a perrera dog – let it not be in vain

ACTIN logo 170Vivienne Wharton lives in Murcia and is very involved in animal welfare with her two groups. Animal Welfare Support Murcia was her original group, on Facebook. Now through ACTIN she is working on trying to change the attitude of Spanish people towards animal abandonment, mistreatment, neutering, and she has written this article about the perreras – we call them killing stations – where hundreds of dogs are put to sleep every week. Her article was prompted by the unnecessary killing of a pointer – through Facebook he had been found a home, people to donate to his care – he was due to be rescued.

I know you, dear readers, will be very moved by the article. Please show your support for the work ACTIN do by joining and adding your support.

  • Granada – 22 dogs abandoned in a refuge – Paws for Thought update

Here’s the original story. Paws for Thought (UK rescue) have taken on the task of saving the dogs, and now they only have Osa and Nelo, and the female escapee, to take out. The dogs are in foster homes and kennels. If you can help with rehoming, please contact Paws for Thought direct. And for those of you on Facebook, read more about the rescue and what has happened to the dogs here.
