  • Dog Rescue Holidays in Cadiz

Dog Rescue Holidays galgos group 170Shaun recently wrote to me about Dog Rescue Holidays Cadiz, which developed from, as often happens if you live in Spain, rescuing abandoned dogs from the streets of Spain. Here he tells the story.

‘Over our 8 years here in Cádiz province we’ve picked up quite a few dogs from the streets and either rescued them ourselves or taken them to the local shelter and then, after seeing the great work they do up there, we decided to pitch in “at the weekends”. Hehe, this idea didn’t last long as no sooner had we started helping than we realised it simply had to be an everyday type of affair as there’s so much work to do.

  • Castilla la Mancha – Spanish hunters on the move – join the protest

Castilla la Mancha running galgos 7 2014 250The galgo hunting federation in Castilla la Mancha have requested the Junta to allow this cruel practice of ‘training’ galgos from motorised vehicles. I have first-hand experience of a galga who went down and was dragged – Paca is in my galgo book, for those of you who have bought it. Please sign this Amigos de los Galgos also writes on the following action she has taken. (google translation)

‘From the Association Amigos de los Galgos we have forwarded the writing contained here down the Parliamentary Association of Defense Animal, (APPDA) which invokes the animal welfare as the ultimate goal of the Association, to see if it may cause any effect.

  • Animales Rioja – land needed which doesn’t flood – please sign appeal.

You will have read below about Animales Rioja having to move their 70+ dogs out of their rescue area because of severe flooding and non-stop rain. Their dogs are all fostered and boarded out in kennels, which they have to pay for. They are asking their local Town Council for help with a new piece of ground. Please sign this petition and share it as widely as possible for them.

I just signed the petition “Ayuntamiento de Logroño: Cesion de terreno para crear un refugio para Animales Rioja” Our goal is to reach 15,000 signatures and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition here

I know you can do it! The ban gassing petition achieved over 70,000 in a week!

  • Prodeanse, Seville – saving more galgos and podencos

Prodeanse Mary 2 200 12 2012Prodeanse was one of the small shelters in Seville which I visited in September. It’s in a terrible area for abandonment of dogs – and horses and mules on tethers day after day, no shelter from the weather – hot or cold. Here are two more souls now in the care of the Prodeanse team.

    “MARY and PANDORA”

It hurts so much that we’d shout and scream, if thus we find peace and relief that we have never found because of many unfortunates… Mary and Pandora since they were born know first-hand the so-called “sack man” which is none other than a Hunter, galguero, rather bad guy, bastard, unfortunate… Although I would prefer to use another vocabulary!

  • Seville – El Refugio Escuela always helping the dogs

Sofia El Refugio Escuela, Seville, was one of the shelters I visited recently in my trip to Spain September 2012. Here’s a video of a galgo they rescued, a survivor of hanging by a galguero, back in 2008. Even then the hunters were claiming they didn’t hang their dogs, and they continue to deny it – yet in 2011/2012 we have published footage and photos to prove THEY LIE, THEY STILL HANG DOGS!

  • Murcia – illegally ‘training’ galgos – the police turn a blind eye!

Training galgos Murcia 250 22 10 2012Running galgos alongside a motorised vehicle – motorbike, car, van, quad bike, is illegal in Spain – except that Andalucia Junta have just passed a law to rescind this – and make it legal again. I have participated in a rescue from Spain which included a galga which had been very badly injured in this way – she went down and was dragged….photos of her are in my book. Paco luckily had great medical, physical and mental care – swimming physio, massage etc. and is now happily in a forever home in France.

This photo was taken in Murcia last week – October 2012. The man is breaking the law. The person who took the photo is a neighbour and frightened of making a denuncia because she and her family would suffer repurcussions from the hunting fraternity. Seprona won’t do anything – they are hunters too.

Here are some of the comments from the Galgos del Sol Facebook page.

Cadiz galga street 1 250 1 2 2012It seems to me that the abandoned dogs problem is Spain is qorse this year than ever…I’ve not reported on situations like the 74 in Murcia, then another 120 in Murcia, plus the 150 in Cuenca…..and that’s not counting the hundreds in the perreras. And now more. A galga and a podenco on the streets of Jerez, Cadiz. The galga looks pregnant. Can anyone squeeze them in somewhere? Contact Maribel maribeljerezsos2@gmail.com
