Shaun recently wrote to me about Dog Rescue Holidays Cadiz, which developed from, as often happens if you live in Spain, rescuing abandoned dogs from the streets of Spain. Here he tells the story.
‘Over our 8 years here in Cádiz province we’ve picked up quite a few dogs from the streets and either rescued them ourselves or taken them to the local shelter and then, after seeing the great work they do up there, we decided to pitch in “at the weekends”. Hehe, this idea didn’t last long as no sooner had we started helping than we realised it simply had to be an everyday type of affair as there’s so much work to do.
Long story short, we had the idea of bringing dog-lovers out for a very cheap holiday (they can stay in a beautiful spare house we have, I chauffeur them about so that they can see some awesome local places etc) and they pitch in at the centre as we get no local help whatsoever. It’s going absolutely brilliantly and we’re able to get so much work done that it’s like a different centre these days.
We’ve just sent off about 100 dogs to our foundations in Germany and Luxembourg so things are a bit quiter at the centre these days although, as you know, that can change in one day.
There are many benefits to our project, obviously, but one prominent positive change has been that the local population see that “guiries” are coming out to help with their own children and this can only be good for animal awareness round these parts. We’re hoping to make a huge difference over the coming years and decades in several spheres of animal ownership.’
