  • Portuguese galga and puppies – rescued just in time

Galga Riti was rescued from the street so heavily pregnant that she gave birth soon after to two gorgeous puppies. Viddy and Viggy will need forever homes when they are old enough, vaccinations, microchips etc.

Lumi is another galgo pup lucky to have been rescued with his galga mom from poor conditions.  You can read the story here and watch the videos of him at play with his sibling.

The only hope of a forever home for these lovelies is outside of Portugal.  Please contact Dogs of Portugal if you can help.

  • Galgos in Portugal needing forever homes

The galgos in Portugal have a terrible life.  Regular readers might remember Estrella, her ‘husband’ and son who were all rescued from nightmare conditions.  This is another beautiful galga rescued from similar conditions, along with 3 of her 7 puppies – the ‘owner’ kept the other 4.  If anyone can offer her a wonderful forever home, please contact the association.

    These are the puppies.

  • Portugal – too late for Noah

Portugal Noah ticks 250This galgo, barely alive, was thrown over the fence to Cantinho do Animals de Beja, Portugal. He was in a corner when the volunteers arrived. As you can see, he was completely emaciated and covered in ticks. They took him straight to the vet. Sadly Noah did not make it.

Who can keep a dog till it gets in this condition? I’ll never understand.

  • Portugal Dog Rescue – Foguete fighting for life forever

Portugal Dog Rescue Foguete 250 1 2014Latest news on Foguete from Ines Canavarro.

‘UPDATE 23/01/14: We know that it has been long since the last news, but apart from the big move our vet recommended that we carried on with the medication for both Esperança and Foguete, and wait for their own body to respond before doing something more drastic like operating on Esperança’s leg, or taking Foguete for a CT scan.

We were waiting for good news, and they are: Foguete hasn’t had an incontinence episode for 3 weeks now, and is very polite and shy when he needs the loo. He doesn’t stumble anymore, doesn’t have nystagmus anymore, has been managing to close his mouth and not drooling, and only has tiny tremors when nervous.

  • Portuguese Galga Joy – waiting for her forever home

Portugal Joy 1 250 2 2013Introducing galga Joy, abandoned on the streets in Portugal, rescued by Portugal Dog Rescue, who also rescued Estrela, and is in foster with Gabi, who describes her character.

‘Joy is a wonderful reddish brown colour, 2 years old. She was very sad and thin, with bad skin when she arrived. She is affectionate and playful, walks well on the lead, but is still nervous out on the street. She also tested positive for leishmania, but this was soon treated and now she is on 150mg Alopurinol twice a day. She will need to be tested again in 6 months’ time.

Oh, I love this dog, just look at her!’

If you can offer Joy the forever home she deserves, please contact Portugal Dog Rescue or Gabi

  • Update on Estrela – one of the Portugal galgas

Estrela free 250 1 12 2012This morning I had the most wonderful news! Do you remember the story of the Portugal galgas, producing puppies, owned by an alcoholic with a druggy wife? Teresa and Ines were desperately trying to save the galgas and puppies – the owner was busy drowning the puppies! You were all marvellous at donating to Teresa to purchase special food and milk for these hounds, whilst she worked patiently to get the dogs away from this living hell.

    Here’s Ines’ news – 8th December 2012!

‘Estrela was allowed to leave her hell-hole today, Teresa has just literally been to pick her up. I’ve attached a few pics taken 3 hours ago, tonight Estrela will have her first taste of freedom, will get more pics tomorrow when is light again.

  • Portuguese galgos – update

Portugal Estrela milk 250 5 11 2012Update on the Portuguese galgos. One hunter has been busy killing puppies before Teresa could save them. But here’s the news about the first galga Estrela. Ines reports. ‘regarding that horrible man getting rid of all pups but 2 :(. We are not exactly sure what happened, but apparently he killed them, but won’t give us any more details… we just can wait for Estrela to leave this place.

Estrela is only mentally slighty better from the abuse she was given. She is on special high energy feed, plus a mix of raw green beef tripe and liver, and Anima-Strath supplements. She has also been wormed twice. Her owner has finally allowed us to take her to the vet this week, so she can get tests done to see why isn’t she putting more weight.
