Introducing galga Joy, abandoned on the streets in Portugal, rescued by Portugal Dog Rescue, who also rescued Estrela, and is in foster with Gabi, who describes her character.
‘Joy is a wonderful reddish brown colour, 2 years old. She was very sad and thin, with bad skin when she arrived. She is affectionate and playful, walks well on the lead, but is still nervous out on the street. She also tested positive for leishmania, but this was soon treated and now she is on 150mg Alopurinol twice a day. She will need to be tested again in 6 months’ time.
Oh, I love this dog, just look at her!’
If you can offer Joy the forever home she deserves, please contact Portugal Dog Rescue or Gabi
The fact that Joy has leishmania should not be a deterrant from adopting her, it will not prevent her living a long and active life, so long as the treatment (which is not expensive) is continued. Please give her a chance.
An interesting comment from a very experienced Spanish dog owner.
All of my girls have Leishmania antibodies. None of them have ever been symptomatic of the disease. Both Lulu and Mari had fairly high levels but I have never treated any of them with anything. My old girl Estrella had the antibodies, again she was never symptomatic. I never treated her and she lived to be 15. Mari and Lulu are 15 and 12 now too. I think there is way too much hysteria about the disease, to be honest. If it manifests then it is really horrible and, in my opinion, pretty impossible to treat with any degree of success. However, if antibodies are discovered just on blood screening and the dog is not presenting with any symptoms then my own personal choice would be to do nothing.
