  • Portuguese galga and puppies – rescued just in time

Galga Riti was rescued from the street so heavily pregnant that she gave birth soon after to two gorgeous puppies. Viddy and Viggy will need forever homes when they are old enough, vaccinations, microchips etc.

Lumi is another galgo pup lucky to have been rescued with his galga mom from poor conditions.  You can read the story here and watch the videos of him at play with his sibling.

The only hope of a forever home for these lovelies is outside of Portugal.  Please contact Dogs of Portugal if you can help.

  • Galgos in Portugal needing forever homes

The galgos in Portugal have a terrible life.  Regular readers might remember Estrella, her ‘husband’ and son who were all rescued from nightmare conditions.  This is another beautiful galga rescued from similar conditions, along with 3 of her 7 puppies – the ‘owner’ kept the other 4.  If anyone can offer her a wonderful forever home, please contact the association.

    These are the puppies.

  • Not a galgo…

One of the problems I have, living in France, is with the number of French – especially farmers – who keep border collies on chains as ‘guard dogs’! Even there is a little Staffie type dog just round the corner from me who spends her life on a 2m chain from the garage. I don’t understand why people have a dog – to do this to them.

I understand even less how someone in Spain can have a Husky x and keep it on a chain for 4 years.

  • Portugal Dog Rescue – Foguete fighting for life forever

Portugal Dog Rescue Foguete 250 1 2014Latest news on Foguete from Ines Canavarro.

‘UPDATE 23/01/14: We know that it has been long since the last news, but apart from the big move our vet recommended that we carried on with the medication for both Esperança and Foguete, and wait for their own body to respond before doing something more drastic like operating on Esperança’s leg, or taking Foguete for a CT scan.

We were waiting for good news, and they are: Foguete hasn’t had an incontinence episode for 3 weeks now, and is very polite and shy when he needs the loo. He doesn’t stumble anymore, doesn’t have nystagmus anymore, has been managing to close his mouth and not drooling, and only has tiny tremors when nervous.

  • Portugal Dog Rescue – galgo in a serious condition, please help

Portugal Dog Rescue Foguete 250 1 9 12 2013First Estrela, then Duke (who travels to 112carlotagalgos today for rehabilitation prior to rehoming) and now FOGUETE, Estrela’s husband and Duke’s father. That completes the family for Portugal Dog Rescue. BHT Foguete is in a bad way and PDR desperately need help to pay for the specialist vet treatment he will need, if he survives. Read on.

Foguete is Estrela’s ‘husband’ and Duke’s father, from the same obnoxious owner. He is an 8 year old galgo that Teresa has known for years, has always been abused by his owner and legally there was nothing we could prove. The scumbag he calls owner has called Teresa this morning (9/12/2013) to take the dog away as he was having a fit and he didn’t want the dog anymore.

  • Urgent help needed – serious storm damage to kennels at Portugal Dog Rescue!

Portugal Dog Rescue 250 3 10 2013Remember Estrela and more recently Duke? Saved by Portugal Dog Rescue. On 22nd October the very worst happened at the shelter – the ‘temporary’ roof came down at the shelter, sadly one dog had to be pts. You can read the full story below. The new kennels which were built after an appeal earlier in the year are fine, more now need to be built in place of the ‘temporary’ one so that this never happens again.

Teresa does most of the rescuing and rehoming herself, looking after the dogs, plus having a job. An incredible lady who does not need the heartache of this happening. It costs 50 euros to build a new permanent kennel. Please help if you can, any amount helps buy some more bricks, tiles for the roof…here’s where you can donate.

  • Portuguese Galga Joy – waiting for her forever home

Portugal Joy 1 250 2 2013Introducing galga Joy, abandoned on the streets in Portugal, rescued by Portugal Dog Rescue, who also rescued Estrela, and is in foster with Gabi, who describes her character.

‘Joy is a wonderful reddish brown colour, 2 years old. She was very sad and thin, with bad skin when she arrived. She is affectionate and playful, walks well on the lead, but is still nervous out on the street. She also tested positive for leishmania, but this was soon treated and now she is on 150mg Alopurinol twice a day. She will need to be tested again in 6 months’ time.

Oh, I love this dog, just look at her!’

If you can offer Joy the forever home she deserves, please contact Portugal Dog Rescue or Gabi
