  • Two lucky galgas – Portuguese Estrela and Spanish Fallera

Two nice stories – Many of you responded to the appeal to fund food and medical care for Estrela, a galga owned by an alcoholic Portuguese hunter, who had 3 puppies which he was intending to drown. Thanks to the efforts of Teresa Sousa and her team, Estrela was rescued, along with the puppies. One of the ladies who contributed towards the fees for Estrela has been accepted for her forever Mom. Last week Estrela arrived at my home for a temporary stay en route for the UK.

And the story of Fallera, a beautiful white galga which an old man used to walk past the Scooby Residencia Valladolid. He lived in an apartment and kept the galga in a garage. Cobie of Scooby eventually managed to persuade the old man to give Fallera to Scooby and she was recently rehomed in Italy.

  • Portuguese Galga Joy – waiting for her forever home

Portugal Joy 1 250 2 2013Introducing galga Joy, abandoned on the streets in Portugal, rescued by Portugal Dog Rescue, who also rescued Estrela, and is in foster with Gabi, who describes her character.

‘Joy is a wonderful reddish brown colour, 2 years old. She was very sad and thin, with bad skin when she arrived. She is affectionate and playful, walks well on the lead, but is still nervous out on the street. She also tested positive for leishmania, but this was soon treated and now she is on 150mg Alopurinol twice a day. She will need to be tested again in 6 months’ time.

Oh, I love this dog, just look at her!’

If you can offer Joy the forever home she deserves, please contact Portugal Dog Rescue or Gabi

Portugal galga 2nd mom 250We’ve been following the story of galgos in Portugal – horrendous conditions in which they survive – and the team of faithful volunteers who work tirelessly to make the lives of these dogs better, against insurmountable odds.

Ines explains the situation more fully.

‘I must clarify some details on this shelter, it is not a registered charity, it is simply Teresa, an animal lover that happens to help every stray dog she finds. She treats, neuters and vaccinates them and finds them good homes. Teresa has a brilliant record, this year alone she rehomed over 60 dogs by herself into loving families, so I and another 2 women volunteered to help her fundraise and look after the dogs.
