Galgo Rescue Almeria – more unwanted galgos arrive
From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria. Helping animals in need never ends.
A few days ago, we received another cry for help—two galgos desperately needed help. so we drove to pick them up. Their owner told us that he and his wife were struggling with serious health issues and could no longer care for them. At first glance, these two sweethearts seem fine: calm, friendly, grateful. But they need medical care before they can start their new lives. Next week, they’ll have a vet checkup. That same week, two other galgo girls were dumped next to our rescue center — alone, confused, abandoned. It remains incomprehensible why asking for help is so difficult… Asking for help is free, and it can save lives. -
Six people arrested for illegally hunting with galgos in Burgos
The Civil Guard caught them conducting hunts with greyhounds outside the closed season in a publicly owned hunting reserve
Six people between the ages of 33 and 63 have been brought before the courts after being caught by Civil Guard officers while they were illegally hunting with greyhounds in a publicly owned hunting reserve in the Arlanza region.According to sources from the Civil Guard, a call was received a few days ago alerting them to the presence of a group of people with no apparent connection to the hunting reserve where they were located, carrying out hunts with greyhounds on the lands of the municipality.
Immediately, a patrol from the Covarrubias station went to the location and began a thorough inspection of the area in search of those responsible, with positive results since while examining a wooded area, a man was located who, upon noticing the police presence, tried to flee; however, he was found shortly afterwards hidden among the vegetation.
As a result of the police investigations carried out, it was learned that while these events were taking place, the rest of the members of the group were trying to leave the place in a car, so the Civil Guard intensified the search, which allowed them to locate the car in the vicinity while it was traveling along a road.
Given this evidence, all occupants were identified and, like the first individual already arrested, lacked the necessary permits and authorizations to engage in hunting. Simultaneously with the police investigation, the corresponding administrative reports were filed for the improper transport of the animals.
The six, in varying degrees of responsibility, have been brought before the court as alleged perpetrators of a crime against wildlife for poaching, and the proceedings have been handed over to the Court of Lerma.

Galgos in training – Save the Galgo
The plight of the galgos has, it seems to me, been worse this year than ever before, and still, all through this summer, volunteers are rescuing starving and injured galgos. A volunteer says, ‘in a month and a half the hunting season with galgos starts again and already the galgueros are training their dogs like crazy to get condition on them, to get stronger muscles, more speed, only to leave them behind later in the fields or perreras if they don´t hunt as they want.
Please, adopt a galgo because there are still many left everywhere from the last season, all in need of a loving family and a forever home! For the end of the hunting with galgos in Spain!!

Disposable galga, maltreated by her galguero….
Look at this absolutely stunning galga. Here’s her story. Literal translation, I’m afraid, as it’s late and I’m out all day tomorrow with my 5 hounds, at a fun dog show.
‘Hi I’m a dog of about seven months that my owner (Hunter)no longer need, due to my right leg breakage. I am very young but already I have fractured one of my legs, he forced me to run run and run and because of the effort that I broke the tendons…
also I have shot wounds on the body, that did it to scare me and so run more rapid…
now I have it a little himchada and cojeo when I get tired much
but I still enjoying running like a Madwoman as good gauge that I am. -
Another petition to sign – please do, every little helps
Danielle Hart writes ‘ I started a petition on AVAAZ calling on the Spanish government to make strict laws to protect the Galgos. When I reach a desired number of signatures, I will need to send it to the Spanish Prime Minister.’

Murcia – June 2012 – Spanish hunters still perpetrating unbelievable cruelty on their galgos – THIS HAS TO STOP!
News in from Scooby Medina.
Murcia: More than 16 murdered galgos found in a village in Murcia with signs that they were violently mistreated. The same galgueros there have more galgos, these were seen this week without water or food and with these hot summer temperatures…
This is a place where several hunters keep their dogs in the worst possible conditions and where they horribly kill the ones they no longer want. Murcia is a dreadful place for animals, especially galgos, and there are many such places we don’t know about. Everyone should raise a stink. But the police need to have a chance to act ( it’s the first time they act, in that part of Spain they mostly completely ignore the cruelty cases) or we can make them angry and they can just turn their backs for good.

Baeza Shelter, Jaen – galgo trap needed urgently, hunters shoot the loose galgos!
You may remember that earlier in the year I posted about Maria Teresa and the Baeza refuge. The sister of a wonderful galgo supporter has now created a website for the shelter, and donated her time and expertise to them. Here is the result.
The shelter is still searching for volunteers for the following tasks:
1. translate the content of the website into French
2. taking photos of the shelter and of the dogs for the website -
Galgueros – the truth of how they keep their dogs! Shame on Spanish hunters.
Two videos to show the truth about how the galgueros keep their dogs – and horses. And they also illustrate the difficulty in changing the situation – these are the older generation of Spaniards, who do not understand that what they do is animal cruelty, that they blacken the image of Spain around the world, thereby hurting the responsible people – the younger generations to a large extent – who abhor this publicity, and abhor the cruelty. Video 1 Video 2 Oh how I’d like to shut these men in the pitch black locked bunkers where they keep their dogs, to live in their own shit!
