International Day of the Dog is now into its 6th year, always on the last Sunday in April. 2011 so happens to also be Easter Sunday, so I held my fundraising IDOD Dog Walk a week early on 17th April. The sun shone brightly on St Pardoux with over 50 dogs and their loving owners turning up for a leisurely stroll along the delightful lanes and tracks which surround this small village in Western France, where I live.

Burgos perrera, white galgo on death row – Seville, Mama galga and 8 puppies, anyone help?
In Spanish history, the White Galgo was revered – it was second in importance only to the birth of a son. There was even a Royal Medal awarded to the white galgo. How they have fallen. This white beauty is in the Burgos perrera, awaiting a painful death. If you have room for him, please contact laura@adoptanos.com

Galgueros claim not to hang dogs – liars! Please help Julia heal
The galgueros deny they hang dogs, they say it never happens now. I have seen with my own eyes that this is not true. And here is yet more proof that they lie. This is Julia;
‘Human cruelty has no limits and is clearly reflected in our little Julia. It does not take much imagination to feel the pain she has suffered, yet the hunters deny once again they do this, so cruel and heartless.

Luz, dragged behind a ‘training’ vehicle – curse you galguero! It’s no holiday for galgos in Seville!
Representatives of Sofia El Refugio Escuela in Seville took part in the manifestation there on 25th March 2011. They took along with them Luz, victim of horrendous abuse at the hands of a galguero, who is now in foster receiving the love and care he needs to rebuild his life and his health. Here’s her story, in their words.
‘What we cannot express is the rage, even hatred for the man who did this. All this poor dog could see was blood and death. Pulled by a 4 x 4 transforming nature into a death camp. Galguero, what a terrible word.

More galgos injured after abandonment – please help with operation costs
At the other end of the refuge spectrum from Scooby is Galgos del Sol, newly created although the team have been saving galgos for a while. Two galgos have just arrived, Ken, victim last night of a hit and run, and Jenny, with a broken leg. Here’s what Tina Solera says about them.
This is Ken. He was hit by a car from behind. His spinal colum has crushed together and he needs a big operation…. 1000 euros. Also Jenny, with a broken leg. She needs an operation…..approx 600 euros.
Galgos del Sol desperately need funds to pay for these operations. Please help and donate by Paypal to tinasolera@hotmail.co.uk or, if you live in the UK, to the association bank account – details on this link
UPDATE
Ken has now been operated on, we wait to see how his recovery progresses. Please donate to the vet fees.

Zaragoza Killing Station – podencos need saving – please help
The hunting season is now over and hunters are getting rid of their ‘4-footed tools’!
These are the Perricos to be slaughtered in a few days at the Zaragoza perrera. This is the appeal I received‘We are only two volunteers who have many dogs in kennels which we pay the fees and we can’t take any more dogs. We have all this responsibility on our shoulders and we desperately need adopters for the dogs in our care, and more so we need special people who can rescue these young podencos before they are sacrificed in a few days.
