A written declaration for Hounds all over Europe

Published 26 Novembre 2012 par Collectif Européen pour la Protection des Lévriers

We have been quite busy this summer. Twice we have met with mrs. Michele Striffler, Member of the European Parliament and vice-president of the Eurogroup on the Welfare of Animals.

Last July, via their attachés, we presented Mrs.Striffler and Mrs Durant the two questions that we still see as an option after the questions posed by Mrs. Durant in 2010, on request of Galgos Ethique Europe, and the question posed in October 2011 by Mrs. Kartika Liotard, on request of Greyhounds Rescue Holland. The last request was supported by a number of European organisations. A complaint on behalf of citizens is premature, given the subsidiarity principle with regards to domestic animals, especially dogs and cats, and the obstacles found in the Spain on this matter.

  • Update Galgo Racing Malaga – more urgent emails to send – please help stop this!

Please everyone, your help is still needed to stop galgo racing in Malaga. 112carlotagalgos and Galgos en Familia are pulling out all the stops. Here’s an update from Charl del Rio.

‘As we know galgos are used as “renta” dogs not pets! Therefore this gets passed off as Cultura Agriculture department. No-one wants to take responsibility to answer. Due to the welfare of the Spanish galgo and the fact that no other carrera de galgo has been held at the hipodromo in Malaga or any other in this area, they are duty bound to give information regards who placed the race there and if there will be permissions to give further races. They need flooding with emails.’

  • Arca, Seville – a volunteer tells her story

Carmen of Arca Seville 200 4 2012A Spanish volunteer tells her story.

“My name is Carmen and I grew up in a village close to Seville in the South of Spain. I always liked animals (when I was a child I always wanted to have a cat). However, I never got any because “animals are not for homes but for the countryside”. I remember seeing galgueros riding a motorbike and pulling 5 or 6 galgos behind for training. This was a familiar picture, so it looked normal to me. I never asked myself why there were always different galgos from season to season. I cannot remember having wondered about the fate of those galgos I did not see anymore.’
