There was a huge demonstration and candlelit vigil in Cadiz last week protesting about the policy of killing dogs and against euthanasia of dogs in perreras Gesser and Zoosanitaria in Jerez de la Frontera. L’Europe des Levriers – saving galgos from Jerez and Bullas, Murcia
Beatrice Monnet, President of L’Europe des Levriers in France, has been working in galgo and podenco rescue from Spain for about a decade. In 2006 she founded EDL and it has since gone from strength to strength. I have been on many rescues with her and what I saw and learnt provided much information for my book. Here is a video of the dogs rescued in February 2012, some of them you will see are galgos in Jerez perrera which were featured on Galgo News. One poor boy lost his paw, caught in a viscious snare; two of them had filaria (heartworm) but have responded really well to treatment.
Where it says ‘accueil’, that means the dog is in foster and available for adoption. The two white galgos live near me in France, and I will see them next month for my 3rd Dog Walk.

Jerez galgos – 22nd March is D-Day
I understand all the dogs were rescued from Bullas today, apart from some puppies which the bastard owner had hidden! But let’s not forget that there are still dozens of galgos arriving in the killing stations too.

Jerez, Cadiz – cheap accommodation in Cadiz!
These are just 4 of the 7 new galgos to arrive in the Jerez perrera for killing. Poor Mama galga, used for breeding, has a huge tumour. It costs 30 euros for an organisation to take the dogs including chip, rabies vacc, passport and worm and tick treatment. Jerez perrera – Galgo Connection Spain, Valencia, to the rescue
This is Cascabel, one of the Jerez galgos, after 12 days of veterinary care with Silvia of GalgoConnectionSpain in Valencial Here’s what Silvia says. ‘This dog came twelve days ago, the ulcers infected, dehydrated, malnourished, we thought he was going to die but, after some days of feeding him intravenously, he started to eat one his own. He’s gained three kilos.’ Silvia says there are problems with all of the Jerez galgos. Many of the perreras don’t feed the dogs much,’why feed a dog you’re going to kill’! As I said, galgos galore abandoned, dumped to be killed – terrified, confused, starving. And it’s not yet the end of the hunting season. Here’s what one volunteer says. ‘Please send on. 20 Galgos in Jerez.. whats wrong with this country that they cannot see whats going on? This all across Spain in its thousands. Just cant understand it al today. case after case… after case! Please send out… although we all know tomorrow there will be more.’
