  • Operation Rehala, Bullas, Murcia – please help the podencos too

    Los Perros de Bullas – Today (8th March 2012) it has been agreed with much teamwork from The Little Pod Foundation, SOS Animals UK, the Animal Welfare Support Murcia group and Podenco Friends to find temporary care and rescue for some of the misfortunate Podencos in the Bullas tragedy. If the rescue is successful, it is hoped that between 8 and 10 dogs will be saved, plus any puppies that are still there. Friday 9th March 2012 is the ONLY day now permitted to rescue any of these dogs.

  • Pro-Setter Spain update Operation Rehala, Bullas, Murcia – 120 dogs

    Here’s a message from Alex at Pro-Setter Spain.

    He is waiting for Judicial confirmation that the day which will be put aside for all associations to rescue the galgos, podencos and other hunting dogs in OPERATION REHALA (BULLAS, MURCIA) will ONLY be next Friday, 9th March 2012, and he asks that every association contacts him at colabora@pro-setter.org so that he can take deails of them and every dog, and how many, with a view to co-ordinating the operation an an orderly and appropriate manner.

    Murcia podenco 250 3 3 3 2012Here’s the original story about the 120 dogs in a compound in Bullas, Murcia. Seprona have denounced and all the dogs will be put to sleep if they aren’t rescued. Pro-Setter Spain is co-ordinating the rescue with other associations.

    I’ve just received news that there are 50 podencos which need saving – podencos are fabulous companion pets, especially for active people who like jogging, long walks, dog agility work.     Tina Solera of Galgos del Sol says, ‘Pro-Setter Spain is co-ordinating the rescue. On 2nd March La Fortaleza, GdS, Andreas Animal Rescue & The Henrietta Foundation joined forces to rescue some of these dogs. Between us we took 14 out. The Henrietta Foundation has been a real rock to GdS throughout this rescue and the camp rescue. We could not do it without them. Pro-setter are co-ordinating this rescue, please contact them if you can take any dogs. They are doing a great job.’

  • 120 hunting dogs in dire conditions in Murcia – Seprona denounce

    120 Murcia galgos 250 2 2012This is a computer translation of the story, so apologies for the grammar! ‘The Civil Guard of the region of Murcia, in collaboration with the service personnel of Health Animal of the direction General of livestock of the community autonomous of the region of Murcia, has dismantled, in the so-called ‘Preparing’, a shelter illegal operation of dogs in the municipality of Bullas (Murcia).

    Facilities, a fenced field of little more than 1,000 square meters located in a rural area, were staying around 120 dogs of different ages and races, mostly corresponding to the varieties that often are used for the exercise of hunting like greyhounds, podencos, pachones and English setters, among others.

  • Update on the rescue of the gypsy galgos in Murcia

    70 galgos gypsy camp 250 21 1 2012This is the latest update on the 74 galgos in Murcia which belonged to a gypsy who was denounced. At the current time, about 28 have been rescued. The gypsy then hid the other dogs.

    ‘We will have a better idea after this weekend of the number saved as the gypsy had moved the dogs he hid back onto his property and Seprona visited again and told him he had to get rid of another 21. So Galgos del Sol and 2 other associations are going back on Saturday to collect more dogs.

    My partner and I worked tirelessly with a dog rescue for three years in the Murcia area, and fostered and rescued numerous Greyhound types (called Galgos in Spain) which were cast off by hunters at the end of each season; you can imagine that hunters are not the most well thought of individuals amongst the dog rescue fraternity in Murcia.

  • Murcia – 70 galgos need rescuing from a Spanish gypsy – send a letter to the Hunting Federation

    70 galgos gypsy camp 250 21 1 201222 January 2012 – as I write a rescue is being carried out in Murcia. Up to 70 galgos in a gypsy camp. The gitano (Spanish gypsy) with these dogs was denounced (see my book to explain a denuncia) and the authorities said the dogs would all be put down unless they were rescued. These dogs are in poor condition, some chained to walls….the gypsies are very hard on the galgos. Several people belonging to rescue associations and refuges are involved in this operation.

  • Galgo Marko – Pepis Refuge, Animals in Distress and Arca Noah to the rescue

    ‘A Galgo (Greyhound) was left tied up outside Pepis Refugio – The dogs were barking as normal but Alan and Jane knew the different barks and this meant a new arrival. Alan walked down to the gate with a small torch only to see two green glows at the gate; yes it was Marko (his new name).
