  • Sick galgo at the gates of Pepis Dog Refuge –

Pepis Solo 400 5 1 2017Another little galgo pup at Pepis Refuge Gates. Jane Brian tells his story.

‘5 Jan 2017. Late last night the dogs in the refuge alerted us to a possible abandonment. We spent an hour searching around with the torch…but could not find anything. This morning when we were cleaning, the dogs started again so watching where they were looking barking we saw this little fella standing looking at us from outside the play area, so he could have been the reason for last night bless him. Unusual for just one so we had another search around but found nothing. He is very skinny and obviously scared. He will be visiting the vets this evening for a medical check-up. His name is Solo.

  • Another abandoned galga – used and abused by a galguero

Galga Savannah 2 350 9 11 2016Yet another galgo abandoned in the olive groves by Pepis Dog Refuge. Judging from her grey face and badly scarred body, she has had a very hard life. Galgos in this area are used for racing rather than hunting…makes one wonder how she got all those scars! Now she is safe with Jane and Alan Brian and has been named Savannah. If you can help feed her and the other galgos, donate here.

  • Duathlon, 19th March 2016, Clumber Park, Nottingham – Sponsor Team Pepis!

Black galgo pup 1 190 11 7 2015Pepis Dog Refuge in Pedrera, Seville, has an outstanding vet bill so far of nearly 4,000 euros!  That includes sterilization of dogs (the first thing to be done with the arrival of each new dog, to prevent unwanted puppies), vaccinations, dogs needing operations, medication…the list is endless.

It’s desperate that this bill is cleared and to that end Ellen Stevens and 2 friends have entered the team event in the Duathlon at Clumber Park, Nottingham, on 19th March 2016.  If you look on the Youcaring link below, you can read all about it.

Please sponsor Team Pepis and share widely with family and friends.  Let’s raise the total and more if possible.

  • Pepis Dog Refuge – can you volunteer to help with the hounds?

And another appeal on behalf of Jane and Alan Brian at Pepis.  If you are planning summer holidays, why not take a week and volunteer at the refuge.

    COULD YOU HELP?

The main thing Jane and Alan need, almost as much as financial help, is volunteers. There is so much work still needs to be done at the refuge but while the dogs need taking care of day in day out, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do anything else. The Rio Seco hotel in Pedrera is €20 per night for a single room and €40 for a double. Alan will collect you from the hotel and drop you home in the afternoon. Jane will provide you with lunch. As someone who has taken dogs from the refuge, another problem is the dogs just don’t have enough time spent with them. Sadly at the moment this is unavoidable when Jane and Alan have 70+ dogs to clean out and feed each day between just the two of them. Just helping for a few days can make all the difference and I can assure you you won’t regret it. Jane and Alan are incredibly welcoming and each and every dog there loves the company of humans.❤ Please please please, if you are in a position to help, please consider it. Contact them here.

  • Victims of the thunderstorms hitting southern Spain – seeking refuge at Pepis

Galga podenco 250 1 11 2015Horrendous storms battering Andalucia this week, including Pepis Dog Refuge. These are the latest arrivals at the gate, Jane Brian tells the story.

‘1/11/2015 – This may be an unusual combination but these two seemed to have teamed up together to keep each other warm due to the heavy rain and thunderstorms we had last night, it was one hell of a storm. We found them soaked and looking very sad and gave no resistance to being helped. Both females and so lovely. Drove them back to the refuge, dried them off and gave them a meal. They are now in a pen with soft bedding to warm them, safe and cosy from the rest of the bad weather we have forecast.

  • Stunning Young Galgo in UK waiting for his forever home

Reilly 190 1 2 2015This beautiful boy is Reilly. As a small puppy, he was left tied by a piece of wire to the gate of Pepis Dog Refuge two years ago and named Phantom because one half of his face is white and one half brown. He was a playmate with my boy Polar, they were pups together. Adopted in the UK and renamed Reilly, sadly due to circumstances beyond his control, he is now in foster in England and waiting for a forever family again.

He is 2 years old, full Pet Passport, no hangups, perfect with other dogs, ready to slot straight into another home.

If you have room for him in your home and your heart, here’s the contact.

  • Update on Polar – handicapped galgo puppy from Seville

Bebe Polar bed 250 1 1 2015For those of you regular readers who have followed the story of Polar, the handicapped galgo puppy left at the gates of Pepis Dog Refuge at 2 months old, here are the latest photos of him with his housemates, galgos Carmela and Bracken, and little Podenca Andaluz Bebe – the boss of the pack! Polar continues to delight us with his antics and annoy us with his mischief – especially with food, shoes, socks, bedding….the list goes on! He continues on a dose of MSM daily and shows no evidence of feeling pain in his joint. Indeed, to see him haring around the courtyard with Bracken, he has no handicap atall!

Bebe’s bed is beside the woodburner – one reason is because it’s small so no one else can get on it! Bracken likes the red bed in front of the French doors. So if anyone else is on there he will go and stand over them or squeeze onto a bit of the bed, till they move!

  • Pepis Refuge – miracles do happen – with a little help

Mobile 250A message from Jane and Alan Brian of Pepis Refuge, Pedrera, Spain – to all of you who have supported them, especially over the last 2 years since they were hit by 2 mudslides through the kennels and their house; their house was condemned for living in; their electricity generator packed up and the new one didn’t last long either; they both ended up in hospital, at different times; the Belgian galgo association who had supported them then pulled the plug because they were feeding all the 60+ dogs, not just the galgos; a ‘supporter’ – I use the term loosely – was trying to close them down. They were at absolute rock bottom.

With your help and support and that of many other people I contacted – we picked them up. All of you who have responded to appeals for help for them – you rock! Having said that, there are still 7+ dogs there – another little xbreed dumped on Sunday – named Sunday! But don’t forget, they need 700 euros/month just to feed all the dogs….plus homes for them too.
