  • Galgo Chapapote – stolen 4 years ago – just discovered

One of the articles in my book on the Galgo Espanol is about theft of galgos. Now you might wonder why ever anyone would steal a galgo when they can be picked up for nothing on the street. This story will explain. Thank you to Greyhounds Rescue Holland for the translation. Watch the video here.

  • HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY Galgo News

Saqhara Carmela bed 11 2012(My galgas Sahara & Carmela sharing a bed today!) Yes, it’s 5 years today since my webmaster Craig and I launched Galgo News. We’ve travelled a long way in those 5 years – published many different stories – happy stories, sad stories, rehomings, appeals, letter-writing campaigns – whatever has been sent to me, I’ve read and published most of it. I’ve only had to remove one post, where people commenting then launched a personal attack on two volunteers in Spain. I won’t countenance libel, so the post was removed. I still have it on file, as the subject matter is important, and one day it may raise its ugly head again.

I’m grateful to all of you lovely readers who have bought copies of my book to learn more about the plight of the galgo; you’ve responded well to appeals for donations towards vet care for sick and injured galgos, and many of you have offered forever homes to hundreds of the galgos featured on Galgo News and associations I publicise. You are marvellous and I feel sure that the volunteers and associations feel the same.

  • Scooby on the track of the galgos of Cigales, Valladolid

News just in from Scooby. Seprona entered a barn in Cigales, Valladolid, where over 50 galgos were kept. They removed 13 of them, aged between 6-12 months, as they did not have microchips. The dogs were taken to the perrera in Valladolid to be chipped, and were then returned to the barn. Because the other galgos were chipped, Seprona know who the owner/s are. Fermin Perez is investigating the matter and the conditions in which the dogs are kept.

  • League Against Cruel Sports – letter to write to them for the Galgos

Earlier in the year I was contact by a someone who had made contact with the League Against Cruel Sports in the UK, to ask if I could write to them about the plight of the galgos. As you will all know, it has been a terrible year for the Spanish hunting dogs, worse than ever, so time has been very short for me.

Natalie Osborne very kindly offered to compose a letter to send, and so I am asking you all to please print off the letter below – copy and paste it into a Word document, and then print and post – to see if the League will help to try and make a change for the galgos.

  • Zaragoza perrera denounced – Seprona takes action

Podenca Zaragoza 1 08 2011 250Seprona investigated the work methods in the perrera in Zaragoza, in reaction to several denuncias made by animal protection organisations. They found that euthanasia was performed without anaesthesia, animals were put alive in freezers to die: mainly pups and cats. Seprona handed their investigation reports to the authorities on May 2, 2012, they want the owner to be prosecuted for violating the law on protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals. Report in Spanish.

I am somewhat surprised to read this, as the vet there has worked to help associations publicise dogs for adoption, and facilitate adoptions. Also, I would be very interested to hear from someone who works in a perrera, dealing daily with the killing of dogs and cats. How do they cope with it, how long are the able to work in that job?
