  • Spanish galgo Ruso, injured but saved from euthanasia, rehomed in USA

Ruso with forever family 22 03 2011 210 This is Ruso with his forever family in America. Ruso was discovered in Los Infiernos refuge in Murcia by Tina, a volunteer. Unbeknowst to her, he had lain for four or five days severely injured and in great pain, unable to stand, feed himself……..as soon as Tina discovered him, she took him out of the refuge, where the owners were intending to kill him, and through contact with Silvia in Valencia, he was transported to her centre for treatment by her vet and rehabilitation by Silvia. What a fantastic story, thanks to everyone involved, including Tina who prevented Los Infiernos from killing him, Silvia and her vet for his rehabilitation,to Greyt Friends, Inc., in Marietta GA who travelled to Spain to bring Ruso to the United States and fostered him until he was ready to move to his new home in Colorado and also GRIN. A happy ending for one deserving survivor of the annual massacre.

  • Galgos, galgos, everywhere – the pressure on the refuges is relentless

Every day I receive emails from Spain, galgos and podencos dumped, abandoned, injured, or hunters taking them to the perreras to be killed or to the shelters and threatening to kill the dogs if the volunteers don’t take them. Day in and day out, the pressure is never ending. I have lost count of how many dogs I have been told about in Jerez, Gesser, Mairena, Cordoba, Seville, Malaga perreras. Last weekend I drove down to the Spanish border and, along with a couple of other cars, brought back 20 galgos and a couple of podencos…many of them are now in foster and awaiting forever homes.

Here are a couple of the latest appeals

  • Greyhounds to China – Pix of Dublin protest 20/03/2011 & America 18/03/2011

There were over 70 people and about 10 dogs, mostly greyhounds, at the Dublin demo yesterday, with photos/videos at see http://tinyurl.com/DublinGreyhoundExportsDemo and http://pix.ie/sensibleken/album/404974 Link to protests in America

Let’s hope there will be thousands out around Spain for the manifestation demonstration on 25th March. Here’s the link to find one near you,.

  • Grand Protest in Spain – 25th March – join a march near you!

On www.noalmaltratoanimal.org you can read or see about a big manifestation through whole Spain on the 25th of March against mistreating of animals and longer sentences in prison for people who are guilty of this.

There is a comprehensive list of all the cities and towns in which a march is organised, time and place to meet. Please circulate this far and wide throughout Spain and get the population motivated. So many Spanish people are concerned about the bad press in the rest of the world about bull-fighting, abandoned dogs and cats, horse wrestling, animals in fiestas, donkey stoning……

  • -Ken – latest news on this amazing survivor

Video update on Ken, severely injured in a road accident, saved by Galgos del Sol, now with Silvia of Galgo Connection Spain for his rehabilitation. Silvia is also looking after Draco, another black seriously ill galgo.

  • Barcelona Dogs – stunning leather dog collars – raise funds for galgo rescue

Klea_levin_house 250One of the items which many associations use for fundraising is to sell dog collars. The huge majority of these collars are fabric martingale collars. My experience of these is that a) the dog scratches the collar and the fabric gets tatty and 2) I would never ever risk walking one of my galgos outside in one. It may be that I have bought a design not suited to the purpose which I required. But personally, I still prefer a shaped leather collar. And the most fantastic designs I have found are Barcelona Dogs.

I met Klea, their creator/designer, when I went to Barcelona at the beginning of December 2010, and I can confirm the superb quality of these collars and the designs unique. Even better that the price for the collars was not staggering, which I had expected, considering the ‘jewels’ used.

For anyone wishing to purchase a collar from Klea and at the same time raise funds for galgos in Spain, then if you order through the link on Galgo News, Klea will make a donation to my Galgo Fund. To ensure Galgo News gets the donation, please use the code berylgalgos. There are two special designs for galgos, at a discount price, but you can also choose a collar for any breed/type of dog from the whole range of collars. So please click on the website Click this link for special rescue galgo range.

As I’ve mentioned before, money raised from the sale of my book and notelets is used to donate to appeals for help with vet fees, which I post on Galgo News.

  • Extremadura hunters – Fepaex says ‘take responsibility for your dogs!’

    Extremadura hunter fepaex.org 02 2011 250
Podencos and galgos both suffer unimagineable cruelty at the hands of the Spanish hunters and gitanos – Spanish gypsies. Most publicity comes from the regions of Andalucia and Murcia, as well as the Spanish Islands Ibiza and the Canary Islands. However, the Spanish interior including the region of Extremadura is also hell on earth for galgos and podencos. Here is a report from Fepaex – Federacion de Protectoras de Animales de Extremadura.

  • Galgo in Seville perrera, curled up waiting to die – the real Seville!

Seville perrera 1 02 2011 200 This poor galgo is in the Seville perrera. Contacts here if anyone can help, I know, everyone is full to bursting and with the latest threat from the bastard hunters, the situation won’t improve. But I have to appeal on his behalf.

  • Jerez – death row – and the massacre continues! Shame on the galgueros!

Jerez 1 01 2011 200 Yet again, another list of poor galgos and a podenco on death row in the Jerez killing station. Did you know there are two killing stations in Jerez – Jerez and Gesser, the latter is a private one and it is claimed that they look after the dogs in their care better, food and water provided.

I have lost count of the number of galgo pictures sent to me this winter, of galgos in Jerez and Gesser and Mairena – all disposed of by the hunters………they couldn’t care less. Contact Maribel if anyone can help these pour souls.

Jerez 2 01 2011 200 When will the Spanish government, regional and municipal councils, hunting and racing federations going to realise the power of the Internet, how much adverse publicity this gives to Spain? So many people vote with their feet and their purses now – won’t go on holiday in Spain and the Spanish islands, won’t buy food produced in Spain.

Millions of Spaniards are unaware of this – why should the minority of hunters and bull fighters and other Spanish animal abusers erode the International image of this country. Always the same, the minority ruin life for the majority.

Pray that there will be some corner, some shelter for these poor abused souls. But all of them are overflowing, submerged beneath the sheer mass of abandoned and injured dogs. Support them, in any of the appeals I run. Even 10 euros will help towards buying food, vaccinations etc.
