  • Pro-Galgo – another galgo saved

Mo Swatek Marek 2 170Another story of heartbreak for a little galgo, found in a 5m deep canyon. Rescuers had to climb down to rescue him and get him to safety. He had a bad hind leg fracture, open wound full of maggots, severe gangrene setting in. There was no chance to save his leg, it had to be amputated. He is now recovering slowly, his liver was also damaged due to the severe infection in his leg.

    He has been named Marek.

He is in the care of Pro-Galgo and the vet bills are over 500 euros. Every little helps. Please help them help Marek. Donations to pro-galgo@hotmail.com by paypal or email pro-galgo@hotmail.com for bank details

  • Update on Eboli – badly injured galga, rescued by El Refugio Kimba

Refugio Kimba Eboli carried 190Update on Eboli, rescued by El Refugio Kimba – badly injured on the road with part of a bumper embedded in her.

Eboli is much better, on Tuesday 15/10 she will go to the vet again so they can remove the plate in the broken leg and start working on the rehabilitation. She is a wonderful galgo, despite the pain that she has suffered, she has never been bad with anyone, even when taking her medication. She is treated twice daily to help her skin recover; she lost most of the skin on her leg which also became infected.

If you would like to help Eboli, here’s the link to the Refugio Kimba website. If my memory serves me right from when I was researching my galgo book, Kimba is the oldest animal shelter in Spain, originally set up to protect fauna and flora.

The shelter is still searching for volunteers for the following tasks:

    1. translate the content of the website into French
    2. taking photos of the shelter and of the dogs for the website

  • Protectora ArcoAris, Cuenca – 150 dogs may be killed – please help!

Protectora ArcoAiris de Cuenca 250Nightmare scenario in Cuenca! I feel sick in my heart to read this, thinking of all the animals who have been saved, who may now be killed. Here’s the story.

The provincial perrera in Cuenca where they used to sacrifice every 3 months many, many dogs, has since January 2011 been a protectora where, since that time, not one dog was sacrificed. The president, Pilar, makes tremendous efforts to keep it this way but because they are just 1 year working as a shelter, they just don’t have enough associations who help them in finding adoption families for their dogs. This means they now have some 300 dogs instead of the 150 which is permitted. Of the 300 dogs there are at least 100 galgos.
