Interesting article. Another example of how the Spanish are trying to change attitudes to animal cruelty and neglect.

A hell of a life for a galgo in Spain
From a post by Jack Leonard on my Save the Galgos page on facebook
‘This coming weekend of January 10 will begin the long awaited Spanish National Championship for the Galgo in the village of Madrigal de las Altas Torres. Thousands upon thousands of galgos have been competing this season all for the foolish dreams of their owners that they will produce the Champion of Spain. The competition is now down to a handful of dogs and the excitement is building.

Pro-Galgo – another galgo saved
Another story of heartbreak for a little galgo, found in a 5m deep canyon. Rescuers had to climb down to rescue him and get him to safety. He had a bad hind leg fracture, open wound full of maggots, severe gangrene setting in. There was no chance to save his leg, it had to be amputated. He is now recovering slowly, his liver was also damaged due to the severe infection in his leg.
He has been named Marek.
He is in the care of Pro-Galgo and the vet bills are over 500 euros. Every little helps. Please help them help Marek. Donations to pro-galgo@hotmail.com by paypal or email pro-galgo@hotmail.com for bank details

ACTIN/AWSM galgos for adoption
This is Ky, who I recently met with the rest of the ACTIN/Animal Welfare Support Murcia Galgos Aysha, Rubio and Donna – who’s only a year old. They all have a tale to tell of cruelty and suffering at the hands of the galgueros but are now safe in foster and waiting for their forever homes. They’ve been waiting quite a long time, there must be someone out there who has space in their hearts and homes for these beautiful galgos.
Ky is black and white, Aysha is a stunning chocolate brown, Rubio is tan and Donna is in the bottom pix lying on the sofa! You can also see me below with little Podenca mum Bonny, also looking for a forever home, and their foster mom Sherlie. If you can’t adopt one, please consider sponsoring one – they all need to eat, why not sponsor a galgo for a month or more.
Please contact ACTIN if you wish to sponsor adopt one. admin@actin-spain.com

Marching in Strasbourg for the Galgos & Podencos June 2012
My galgas Carmela and Sahara (with hubbie David) arriving at the European Parliament. I’m delighted to report that the Manifestation in Strasbourg organised by CREL had tremendous support from groups across Europe – over 1,000 people marching, with their galgos and podencos – and a borzoi and afghan. Just shows the strength of feeling against the Spanish hunters and their barbaric treatment they perpetrate on their hunting dogs, primarily galgos and podencos. Many hounds there bore the scars – where they had been cut up, beaten, burned, injured in road accidents, caught in snares – all walking on behalf of their ‘cousins’ still in Spain and still suffering. They came in family groups too, and one lady brought all 6 of her rescued galgos.
