  • Christmas Holiday in Seville? Not for the galgos nor the volunteers.

Fermin Perez 12 2010 170 This is the story behind the 130 galgos arriving at Scooby Medina during the course of December. Cobie and Vera explain.

In Andalucia in southern Spain, the Foundation Benjamin Mehnert association is very actively busy with saving galgos which are, in the eyes of their owners “worthless for hunting” and will, no matter what, get rid of them one way or another. Thousands are brought every year to the perreras, the killing stations, also called the waiting room for death, where their life is not worth one penny and so they are treated like that.

Her name is Tinta and she has had her first operation. In 2 weeks the following one. She is negative in Leishmania, Erlichea and Filaria so that is great news. She is behaving very well and seems happy despite all her wounds.’

  • Happy 3rd birthday Galgo News!

Yes, 3 years since Craig and I launched Galgo News. Time to reflect on the past year, both highs and lows.

High has definitely got to be the completion of my book and its launch – to date we’ve done 2 print runs, selling over 100 copies of the printed book and 10 ebooks. And I haven’t even started the next phase of promotion! I’ve just changed my publisher and am waiting to take collection of the next print run. The book has also now been translated into Spanish – publishing will start in January 2011. And a French translation is currently under way.

  • Spanish Galga Lola – an expressive poem to share with you

Rehoming Lola and Owen Jeminah Kunfeld 11 2010 200 I’d like to share this poem with you. Written by Lola, with a little help from her lifetime friend Owen Davis who adopted her, his wife works with Greyhounds in Nood Belgium. (Photo by Jemimah Kunfeld)

    LOLA’S POEM

Spain is the land of the heartless.
I don’t care about the mosque at Cordoba.
I don’t care any more about Pablo Casals.
Or what his cunning fingers did with the bow.
The white Alhambra, abounding in cool shade,
    Singing fountains and sunlight,
Is a story of long ago.
    Forget it.

  • Saved from death in Spain – galgas rehomed by GRIN in America

Sofie pix 20 09 2010 250 Telma Shaw and Wally Lacey of GRIN in the US recently travelled to Spain to visit volunteers with galgo and podenco rescue associations and refuges, and to take back with them four dogs which had been offered forever homes in the US. Here’s what Telma says.

‘ We are back!! An amazing trip meeting tons of people and visiting
shelters, boarding facilities, a huge new project/kennel for the galgos near
Sevilla (more news on that) and we brought back three galgos…..the sad news is that we had to leave Angie at Madrid airport because on the way from Valencia to Madrid, Silvie the other galga started barking up a storm and got Angie all agitated to the point of panic, biting the crate, bleeding, temp increased, panting terrible, heart palpatations etc etc..we had to wet her down and let her sit with us and it took her an hour to calm down..we could not in good conscience continue the trip to the US.

  • Galgo News Stands Neutral as far as the World Cup goes!

Beryl & Galgas 3 250 Personally, as a Brit, the English football team were a joke. That’s nothing new. We introduced football, cricket, tennis, golf to the world. Whatever we introduce, we then are the losers. Andy Murray put up a good show in tennis, but the footballers – and when you consider what these males are paid????!!! – were pathetic. And why? Because there are so many foreign footballers in the UK football teams that the English team manager can’t find enough decent English players. I could go on further, but I won’t.

Just to say that I support neither Holland nor Spain in the World Cup final. Why? Well, Holland has taken so many rescued galgos to its hearts and homes, but Spain is the home of the galgo, and I could never abandon support – even in the World Cup – for the amazing volunteers who work to rescue, and give shelter to, and rehome abroad, these beautiful innocents who suffer so at the hands of the bastard galgueros.

So, Galgo News stands neutral. But hope you enjoyed the photos and comments from galgos in Holland and Spain!
