I have to admit to being somewhat upset. Not for myself, I hasten to add, but on behalf of my friends in Spain and elsewhere in Europe. I’m talking about the amazing animal rescue volunteers, rehomers, fosterers – everyone involved in helping abandoned and injured animals in Spain. Regular readers will know how often I praise these people – they work tirelessly against terrible odds, risking their health, their relationships, threats to themselves, their families, their homes. I’ve visited them in Spain over the past few years and seen what they do, every day, every week, every year – no letup.

Canine love and loyalty – and the bestiality of the Spanish hunters
Here is a story of loyalty and love between dogs. Totally the opposite of the bastard hunter, who left his bloodied shoes behind! For those of you who have not travelled into the Spanish heartlands and hell on earth for galgos, this also gives you an insight into some of the terrain in which they have to survive. Thank you to Valarie Woolf for sending in the translation. So touching.
Fidelidad: A Story of horror, fidelity and hope. Only 50 km from Madrid a galgo (one of many) is abandoned. Someone crosses her path, follows her and wants to help. He sees that she is guarding, that she doesn’t want to leave and she doesn’t want anyone to come near. The dead galga was her friend. A few meters away are the blood smeared shoes and the rest of the rope. (baler twine, impossible to break!)

Galgos saved from death – please donate to vet fees
The perreras in Spain are full to bursting with abandoned dogs, especially galgos now that the hunting season is drawing to a close. Despite all the ones rescued from Jerez perrera, Cadiz, there are still more than a couple of dozen there, awaiting a painful death. At El Paraiso perrera, they are feeding the galgos, hoping someone will rescue them. Several have been taken to foster homes already, and two more were taken out last weekend. White ones, which were once regarded as THE most important galgo to the Spanish aristocracy.

Cheap Spanish Holiday Accommodation in Malaga, Seville and Cadiz
Not such a happy time for these galgos, chucked aside by the heartless hunters to be killed – even the method of killing will not be kind. Terrified, confused, traumatised………….these gentle affectionate dogs do not deserve the life meted out to them by the hunters. They didn’t ask to be born.
There are more than a dozen galgos still in the Jerez perrera, contact Maribel; others here are in the Alhaurin Malaga perrera, contact Vera, and the ones behind bars are in the Seville perrera, contact Maribel
