• The Spanish Galguero – victims of their cruelty

Murdered galga 170 1 1 2016Intimidation is a terrible thing, especially when the result is attacks on people, property, vehicles, animals.  It is not uncommon in rural Spain for people who speak out against animal cruelty, make denuncias, to suffer in such a way.  Here is a story of just one such case.  My heart goes out to the poor lady, and to her dogs who died so horrendously.  (Taken from a facebook page Million Paw March for Justice)

‘With permission, We are saddened, shocked, and angered to have to report that the post made on the March earlier of the murdered Galga, Nanou, mutilated and tied to the owners fence in an act of apparent revenge belonged to one of our Marchers. A Marcher, who asked not to be named, who has been with us all from the very beginning. No words can properly express the sorrow and pain our Friend of the March is going through but they wanted a summary of the events told here and the village named.

  • 35 More galgos rescued from Jerez (Cadiz) perrera by Scooby

Fermin Perez Martin, president of Scooby, tells the story.

‘On Monday 18/1/2016 we went to Jerez to pick up 35 more galgos, who now are sitting comfortably in our shelter.

We should have taken 36 galgos, but during the release of 5 galgos from the back of a trailor carried by their galguerro, one of the galgos was so terrified, he broke free from his leash, gave many bite wounds to his former ‘master’, and he fled for his life. This is sad, very sad that a galgo who was so close to the chance at a better life with us, took his chance of freedom to escape the life he knew, to be used only as a tool.
We hope that the volunteers in Jerez will find him and eventually he will get the life he deserves, and this highlights the huge importance of our work, travelling great distances to save as many of these mistreated souls that we possibly can.
Please support us in our even increasing work, you will be seeing the many new faces of our wonderful galgos appearing soon and ready for adoption.’

  • Scooby takes 50 Galgos & podencos from Castilla La Mancha…

Scooby 50 Castilla la Mancha 1 2016 250From Fermin Perez Martin, president of Scooby refuge.

‘In a few weeks the hunting season with galgos will come to an end and that means that now already shelters and perreras are completely full with galgos, discarded by their owner who just considers them a bad working tool and nothing more…

Scooby will take the next couple weeks hundreds of galgos and podencos in to save them from being killed in a perrera or waiting for years and years in shelters because nobody adopts them.

  • Levriers sans Frontiere – 30 more galgos waiting for forever homes.

Levriers sans Frontiere are an established French galgo (and podenco) rescue association whose team regularly travel down to Seville and bring rescued galgos back to France for rehoming. Here’s notice of 30 more who are now awaiting adoption.  I post this as an example of how many galgos come into France every month with all the French rescue associations and why it is getting more difficult to home them.  The associations do marvellous work but I fear it will get even more difficult to find homes for all the dogs year on year.  Spain HAS to introduce control of breeding of hunting dogs.

  • Badajoz perrera – life on death row

Have you ever wondered how a dog feels to be dumped in a perrera in Spain….these two young galgos are an example, in Badajoz perrera.

  • Valladolid perrera – put a protectora in charge – sign the petition

Please everybody sign this petition that the perrera provincial from Valladolid, the one where Scooby takes all the galgos that enter, stops sacrificing dogs and that the license to take the abandoned dogs from that area will be given to a protectora who gives the dogs in adoption and NOT put them down, like Scooby for example…

If you sometimes wonder if petitions make a difference – rest assured they do.  When printed off and handed in, they can sway a decision.

  • Scooby take 50 hounds from Cadiz…

The Scooby Medina team recently travelled to Cadiz and took back 50 hounds to the refuge, together with a podenco which had been hung…and survived.  You can read his story here.  Please help Scooby – volunteer to look after the dogs, donate towards feed and vet fees.  And the hounds all need forever homes.

  • Scooby Medina to the rescue again – newborn galgo pups abandoned at the gates

And another story of newborn galgo puppies struggling to survive without their Mom…and a galga Mom probably stressed without her puppies! How can people be so heartless?!

    Scooby to the rescue again.
