  • Ejica, Seville, Spain – Spanish hunter hangs his galgo – August 2012

8th August 2012. Spanish hunter hangs his dog. It has a broken neck and, to make if worse, it’s also had its leg broken. Where? Ejica, SEVILLE! August 2012. Let the hunters deny they don’t hang their dogs. This is the 3rd such story of hung galgos which I have received this week, I’m just waiting for more pix of the other one.

WARNING, unpleasant picture. I’ve posted the photo here

  • Galgos in training – Save the Galgo

Injured pup 170The plight of the galgos has, it seems to me, been worse this year than ever before, and still, all through this summer, volunteers are rescuing starving and injured galgos. A volunteer says, ‘in a month and a half the hunting season with galgos starts again and already the galgueros are training their dogs like crazy to get condition on them, to get stronger muscles, more speed, only to leave them behind later in the fields or perreras if they don´t hunt as they want.

Please, adopt a galgo because there are still many left everywhere from the last season, all in need of a loving family and a forever home! For the end of the hunting with galgos in Spain!!

  • Nano Calvo, Hounding Misery, the final chapter

Earlier in the year I published links to the weblog of Nano Calvo, a truly exceptional photographer who adopted a galgo and wrote his story, Hounding Misery. Nano has now written the final chapter of the story of his galgo, and you can read it here. If you want to read the full story of Hounding Misery, you will find the links to each chapter at the bottom of the page.

  • Another case of vile maltreatment of a galga – Galgos 112 to the rescue

This is the story of Noa, a galga found in Cordoba with a badly injured leg, who jumped into a river to escape being caught. But now she is in the care of Galgos 112. Her body was full of gun pellets, she has lost an eye, and her leg has been amputated. She is now in foster care in Seville.

Here’s her story. apologies for the grammar, but I’ve just lifted it off an Internet translator. But you will understand it.

  • Galga Ginny – fighting against the odds – please help

Ginny 2 170 7 2012Maribel Jerez does a marvellous job of circulating appeals on behalf of dogs on death row in Spain’s perreras, chiefly in Jerez and Gesser in Cadiz. One recent one which circulated was a photo of a sad galga, no one came forward to take her, so Charl of 112carlotagalgos stepped in to save her. The perrera has now decided to spay dogs before they can leave, so Ginny, as she has been named, was spayed. It was only when she was collected from the perrera that it became obvious that Ginny was not in the best of health. Here’s her story.

  • Podencos to the UK – Adopt only through a recognised association!

News is coming out about some podencos being sent to the UK for adoption – this is not being done through any recognised association, there is little backup if a homing does not work out and, even worse, ‘adopters’ are allowing their podencos off lead shortly after the dogs arrive! This is terrible news, for the dogs and for the ‘adopters’ – please, everyone, do not adopt a podenco from anyone other than a recognised rescue and rehoming association. Because of these irresponsible actions, podencos are going to end up in shelters in the UK, and possibly get the breed a bad name.
