As I cried tears over the galga left sick and severely injured at the side of the motorway – curse the man who abandoned her – there is yet another tale.
Here the volunteer explains.
‘Today I am completely heart broken yet again to have seen this young galga in our refuge. She arrived last night after a lady rang the police to say this galga was sleeping in the middle of the road. There is a reason she was sleeping and starving in the middle of the road, SHE’S BLIND.
She hardly has the strength to stand up and when she does get onto her weary legs she is walking straight into the kennel walls. There is evidence on her shoulder she was previously hit by a car.
They want to put her down but I have expressed a different opinion. When I went into the kennel her tail wagged and she almost sighed with relief as I stroked her head. She just wants to be loved. Will anyone help her?.
NB Again, is it kinder to put her to sleep, in the loving caring arms of someone who will comfort her? What chance does she have against all the thousands of galgos abandoned during the past 3 months by the heartless hunters – the hunters sicken me through to my very soul. I have dedicated the rest of my life to working to do whatever it takes to stop these bastards!
How do these volunteers cope with all the emotion involved in dealing with these deserving cases – such terrible animal cruelty, so unnecessary.
I curse yet again all the galgueros, and their wives and children and everything they touch in their uncaring soulless lives. There is no excuse whatsoever for cruelty and suffering of this nature.
PPS If I could, I would take all these deserving galgo souls into my home, but that doesn’t solve the problem the galgueros cause! Bastards!

This one is a heartbreaker. I arrived at the refuge to see Guapita finally settled and happy and felt pleases only to be hit with this little beauty laying as if she were dead. The moment i stroked her, her tail wagged. What are we going to do???? Soon its summer and the next batch of dogs will be thrown out as people will be going on holidays.
I wonder if shes blind because she was hit by a car? It could be temporary.

It will be the same in France from June onwards, abandoned dogs whilst owners go on holiday, and then they buy a puppy in September. Even over Easter, I was staggered at the number of dogs lost, just in my area. One was a galga cross, and when she was eventually caught after a few days on the run, it turns out the people who adopted her – through a French rescue association – didnt want her back!
You are a star to do what you do to help the dogs.
I just get so angry about it all! As is probably reflected in some of my posts!

What a heart-breaking story. I guess she will have little hope of being rehomed in Spain and I fully appreciate the position that refuges find themselves in with so many dogs & so little space, but surely that shouldn’t mean this little galga is put down without being given a chance. Will the refuge be in a position to have the cause of her blindness assessed, in case it is not permanent? I would be happy to make a donation towards the cost involved in doing so.

That would be amazing thank you. I went to see her this morning and sat with her for about 20mins and just stroked her. She was so happy just to recieve some love but of course when i had to leave it was heart break all over again as she was sniffing for me. Ive cried so much for them all this last week.
I will find out what the plan is for her and if she needs more treatment regarding her sight I will post and let you know. I know the vet saw her yesterday and gave her a light sedative i think to relax her so we need to give her a few days to settle. She is such a sweetie. If I could just win the lottery I would take them all.
Thanks Tina, I will keep checking for further posts. She would surely have been dumped or killed before this if she had been blind all along so hopefully her blindness may be as a result of an accident or something medical which is treatable. I am involved with a small home rescue in the UK named Tailends and one of our dogs who was rescued in Ireland came to us blind as a result of untreated diabetes which was treated by surgery and her sight was restored. It must very stressful for her having been picked up and put into the kennels, so I guess that was the reason for the sedative, to allow her time to settle, and then there is also the old shoulder injury. Please keep us posted, I am sure I’m not the only person whose heart she has stolen and who wants her to have a chance.

How marvellous that Suzie has this information about temporary blindness and the refuge where Tina is a volunteer can get an assessment, so that the galga can have treatment, then she would certainly have an angel looking over her – besides the angels in the refuge.
Please keep the comments and information coming in, as I am sure a lot of people are now rooting for this gal.

Tina, can you let me know the name of the refuge she’s in and where in Spain the refuge is located. I am going to make a couple of phone calls on Monday to people & organisations I know who have an involvement with animal rescue in Spain, I have previously adopted a galga through one of them, to see if I can find some more support for this little galga. Even if I can only organise some more money to help pay to have her blindness fully assessed that would be a start then we would all know what we were dealing with & hopefully find a way forward to help her.

Just to update you. I have had three enquiries of people wanting to adopt her. Obviously we need to look into this further but my word what a good start! Yippee
Another update if you dont mind. 26 emails of people enquiring and wanting to adopt this blind greyhound. my goodness!!! I can hardly believe whats happening, she has stolen everyones hearts. Two enquiries are from galgos sos and glagos112, so i am hopeful for a good home.

They have a man who previously adopted a blind greyhound and has been waiting for another case. Galgos112 are a well known association here and have assured us this man is perfect for her. I have set up a paypal account but funds are no longer needed for Esperanza because galgos112 have an eye specialist waiting to see her. However I am now turning my attention back to the other greyhounds so if anyone would like to donate towards them being castrated please let me know. I will then post separately. The refuge she helps is overflowing with dogs,
short of funds, and any help will be appreciated.
And it is great for Tina to know so many people
care about what Los Infiernos is doing to help the dogs, as she was very upset
earlier in the month.
It is a great emotional and physical strain for all
the volunteers involved in the stray dog problem in Spain; so much so that some
of them just have to step back and take time out. I can never give them
enough praise and try and support them as much as possible.

What a fabulous outcome, I am glad someone has come forward so soon to rehome her. As Beryl knows having lost my own galga a few months ago, I am looking to take another dog from Spain either galga or podenco, and I was about to offer to take Esperanza myself, but it’s obviously better & less stressful for her to be rehomed within Spain, that had been my one reservation about offering a home in the UK as soon as I saw the original post. I will wait for the new post about Sandy & Gaupito, then make a donation. Also, is there an address for you or the refuge? I do have some new collars & leads I would be happy to post to you if they would be of use. I am sure this happy outcome has lifted everyone’s spirits & I hope it means you know how much we appreciate all you do for these wonderful dogs. Regards Suzie
Hi Suzie, we would love you to take a greyhound from us and altho it is nice when they are rehomed in spain this isnt always the best solution. In Esperanzas case we are told galgos112 know this man very well and is going to be perfect for her. Great, but believe me if Sandy, Guapita or Lali could get a good home in the UK (out of Spain for good) we would do everyhthing we could to make this happen. Guapita and lali are being spay next week. I paid for Guapita and a generous lady from America put 100dollars in my account for lali last night. We now need to raise money for Sandy to be done. I will post tomorrow to Beryl about these greyhounds we have. Thanks so much for your interest.
Tina, why has Esperanza been returned to the refuge (you said on FB it is because she’s too ill to travel so what’s going to happen to her NOW?)
Hi janice. For some reason the wound on her leg opened which they were not happy about and in general she seemed stressed, disorientated and not ready. She goes again tomorrow. I think she has antibiotics now and a vet will be waiting for her at the other end. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!
Fingers all crossed, and prayers for her guardian angel to take care of her on her journey to her caring forever home. These galgos cope with so much trauma, and remain loving and affectionate dogs.

Yes, great news about Esperanza. Now we have to get the other galgos out before the hunters and gitanos come back again in August/September, wanting/stealing the galgos ready for the next hunting season. Bastards!

Had an email this morning to say she has arrived safely 8am this morning and is now going to have a bath and see a vet. Hopefully my next post to Beryl will be with photos of her in her new home happy!! thanks for everyones support. Just a week ago it was almost decided to put her down and now her new happy life is just beginning!! x
