This is a beautiful poem by Kathy Backes of SOS Levriers. I’ve translated it from French, so please excuse the English not being quite grammatical.
Negrete
You’ve known that poverty,
My poor old mistreated dog!
They beat you,
They kicked you
They forgot that you were hungry,
They forgot that you were thirsty
They put out their cigarettes on you,
They burst out laughing when you’re hurt,
Very bad!
An eternity of evil!
Where someone has looked into your eyes too sad
Someone took pity on you
In this city of a thousand houses,
And he, thy Saviour
Took you to the shelter!
And from that moment …
You were saved,
My poor old mistreated dog
My Negrete!

Thank you, Kathi, that is a really beautiful and moving poem, and so true for many galgos when they are rescued by the wonderful volunteers working in the Spanish refuges.
Thank you too for all you do to help these beautiful loving dogs.
