This news is just in from Anjo, about a dog pound with some 80 dogs in it, where just one person is the director/worker/etc.
You can see the state the place is in, the photos were taken by 3 girls who went to this perrera to adopt a dog.
They found a dog there which was being eaten by other dogs, and they bravely got it out to the vet, where it was euthenased.
They also found the rotting remains of a dog in the dustbin. Dogs were there without food or water.
Inside the shelter are more dogs, without any daylight. The place does not seem to be cleaned more than once a week, or even less.
The pound has been denounced to the police, and also an inspection by the environmental police has been officially requested.
It would be a good idea if in Mieres, emails are received from other countries, not only in Spain.
We want your support in this, even though we have seen in the past in Oviedo that it may lead to nothing, but we MUST put pressure on the Mieres council, they subsidise the dog ‘shelter’ with 25,000 euros per year!

AL ILUSTRÍSIMO AYUNTAMIENTO DE MIERES.
Señor Alcalde, señores concejales: ¿como es posible que hasta fechas muy recientes no se hayan preocupado por saber el estado de la perrera y sus inquilinos a pesar de ser el Ayuntamiento quien subvenciona la misma? Por que solamente una persona ha estado al frente de la protectora de animales de Mieres durante casi dos lustros cuando normalmente se necesitan un mínimo de seis personas en la composición de la junta directiva de la misma ?
Trabajadores a parte, claro está. Señor alcalde, somos un grupo de amantes de perros y gatos que se ocupa y preocupa diariamente del bienestar de los mismos, hemos observado la carencia total de agua y electricidad en la perrera municipal así como servicios sanitarios y un largo etcétera.
Tambien hemos comprobado que las instalaciones de la perrera en su conjunto más que lamentables son desastrosas.
Lamentablemente , también hemos visto un perro muerto dentro de una bolsa de plástico introducida en un contenedor de basura, pero, eso no ha sido todo ya que para agravar más nuestro malestar había un perro con una pata trasera medio comida (puede demostrarse con fotografías) y heridas muy graves en abdomen y cuello.
En la Clinica Veterinaria “El Caudal” ante la gravedad de las heridas y sin posibilidad de curación decidieron practicarle la eutanasia.
No es raro que ocurriera esto entre otros canes ya que están (estaban) todos/as juntos: hembras, machos, conflictivos, no conflictivos y para rematar la “faena,” sin comida.
Como ciudadanas y ciudadanos antes esta situación de abandono total de la perrera y como contribuyentes del Ilustrísimo Ayuntamiento de Mieres, pedimos encarecidamente el cese del responsable de la protectora ya que el maltrato observado a los perros ha sido evidente. Recuerde señor alcalde, que los perros y gatos están amparados y protegidos por el Gobierno del Principado por ley.
Esperamos que ante ésta situación tan lamentable el equipo de gobierno del Ayuntamiento tome las medidas pertinentes para que la crueldad en la que han estado los canes hasta la fecha se corrija de una vez por todas y se tomen las medidas adecuadas para evitarles más sufrimientos.

A lot has happened since these terrible things happened – an animal welfare organisation has taken over, the council has given them 10 months (up to he end of 2009) to show that managing a dog shelter can be done in a different way. The dogs that were survived were taken to a pension, volunteers have worked hard to renovate the old shelter and the dogs are back now! Good luck!

TypePadGreat news, and more information about the work which is being done by the volunteers, and about the health of the dogs, and which association is involved and whether they would like donations to help them would be fantastic to post on Galgo News.
If there is a website with this information, please send me the link, and pictures would help show what is being done too. The more publicity about this, the better. Would it help to write to the council to say how people admire what is being done, to encourage the council to keep the refugte open and give the volunteers funding to continue their work.
