L’Europe des Levriers carried out their largest rescue of dogs from Spain to France last weekend – 39 dogs in all, including 3 galgo puppies and a little podenca bitch and her 2 puppies.
I posted appeals on a couple of Francophile forums and was overwhelmed with the generosity of people There were monetary donations, with which I purchased sacks of dog food and wormers for the refuges, plus dog beds and beddings, animal medicines, collars and leads. There wasn’t room for everything on this trip, so I’ve kept some in storage for the next rescue, probably later this month.
The dogs came mainly from 2 very poor refuges (I’m waiting for pictures of these from one of the French team of volunteers) and on the whole were in reasonable condition – very thin, of course, but coping well with the journey. Only one poor boy, Noel, had an old injury to his off hind quarters and it is hoped that it is not too late for a remedial operation to improve his mobility and condition.
They spent the night at mine, luckily we have farm outbuildings suitable for coping with numbers of animals. One of the modes of transport was a small horsebox with 2 members of the team from Limousin, seen here loading some of the dogs on Sunday morning ready for their final journey to their foster and adoptant homes.
I’d like to say an enormous thank you. both from myself and from Beatrice Monnet, president of L’Europe des Levriers, for everyone’s kindness in giving something to help the dogs in the refuges in Spain, and for being so concerned about their plight. Hopefully more people are now aware of the terrible atrocoties committed against beautiful loving dogs, will join in our campaigns to get the Spanish authorities to control their indiscriminate breeding, and the cruelty inflicted on them during their short lives in Spain.
As soon as I receive copies of the photos of the refuges, I’ll post some.
