Here is the story of Beatriz Marlasca, another Spanish volunteer who has opened a shop especially for galgos and greyhounds. Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo interviewed her.riz
My name is Beatriz. For many years, I have worked in the animal protection. Like everyone, doing field work, cleaning, and making desparasitation, cures, using my skills as a Technical Assistant and Veterinary Assistant
I was always aware of the thousands of animals which were abandoned to their fate or directly delivered to a shelter by their owners, because they bother … the puppy had grown and had no longer so much grace, did not know what to do with the holidays and when I reported that there were dog hotels, they were not willing to bear that expenses, sons, husbands, wives with allergies … they were just a few of the many excuses for leaving your dog or cat.
And then, going to the shelters as a volunteer, I knew what happens in this country with a race, as is the Spanish greyhound. I started to work with them and soon I was totally hooked to it, those eyes full of fear and instead of gratitude because you gave a caress, their calm nature …
Then I decided to focus all my efforts on helping the Spanish greyhound, raising funds to prepare them for travel to foreign families to adopt them, contacting people who had many years doing this work and, of course, adopting one myself Tren (Train), a wonderful Spanish greyhound that was found with the rope around his neck on the train tracks.
Now, years later, after a change in my life, I’ve created my own business “GALGO and more “, the first pet shop in Spain with Greyhound’s Boutique. And from here, now I have found another way to continue helping this beautiful breed. We donate a part of its profits to associations involved in greyhound rescue, I also have a small veterinary clinic, and have special prices for vaccines, tests for leishmania, passports, etc.
But the most important thing is showing the people that the dog is extraordinary to have it in an apartment living with you. They hardly do no bark, do not smell, do not loose hair … they are so much more animals for hunting or racing.
In short, encourage adoptions here in our country Spain. Nothing better than enjoying a dog as our own Spanish Galgo.
I appreciate very much the opportunity Sandra have given me to tell you my personal experience here and I encourage you to put a galgo in your life. Not only will you not regret it, but also I assure you that you would like to repeat!
Beatriz Marlasca.
