  • Help get injured galgo Indie out of the perrera to the vet

    Weblink.

This young galgo is in a perrera, injured and needing an operation.  Funds are desperately needed to pay the vet fees and help Indie on the road to a forever home.  Please look at the fundraiser and buy some ‘dog boxes’ towards Indie’s operation.

  • The magic of a Spanish Galgo

This is taken from a page about the greyhound but it also applies to the Spanish greyhound.

They might be tall, lean, and built for the speed of the wind, but their spirits are as gentle as a summer breeze. Greyhounds prove that angels come in elegant, leggy packages, often found curled up on a soft sofa instead of racing across the sky.

Their long, stilt-like legs carry a heart of immense kindness, and those deep, soulful eyes can heal the roughest days in an instant. We are incredibly lucky to be chosen by these graceful, affectionate companions who demand nothing but a warm spot to nap and a gentle hand. (more…)

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – a busy year of ups and downs

    Video

2025 news from Galgos Rescue Almeria

The past year was one of ups and downs. We faced unexpected setbacks and intense emotions, but also countless beautiful moments, shared with the special dogs who crossed our path. It was a hectic year that flew by, yet one we look back on with warm and grateful hearts.

We think back to all the D-days: those unforgettable moments when our beloved dogs packed their bags to meet their new families. No fewer than 177 dogs found their happiness this year. A result we could only dream of, and one that was made possible thanks to our amazing partners: Associazione ZAC Odv , Un Levriero per la Vita, Project Galgo, Vegrennen EV, Simona Norkute (Lithuania), Helping Animals Almanzora, Friends of Mazarrón Animals, Stichting Wereldhonden, and of course you—our loyal supporters. By sharing their stories so widely, you helped give each of them a new future. (more…)

  • Galgo puppy rescued and safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

Frm Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

    Video

This little guy recently arrived at the Rescue center. A tiny baby… trembling, scared, completely lost in a world that had been far too harsh on him. His eyes wide with fear, his little body so fragile you were almost afraid to touch him.   Because evening was already falling and the darkness was creeping in, we first settled him in very gently. No more stimuli, no new voices… Just peace, warmth, and soft words. You could feel in everything that he needed this after such a nasty, cold and heartless ordeal. As if he was finally allowed, after a long time, to breathe again.  Only this morning, with the first light, could we take a proper look at him… (more…)

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – callouts to rescue even on Sundays

    https://www.facebook.com/reel/1177445137849126

    From Galgos Rescue Almeria

Even on Sundays, the rescue centre never rests.  When the phone rings, we often already know what time it is. Once again, a call for help. A small galgo girl… no longer wanted. Discarded. Thanked for her work, then cast aside as if she no longer had any worth.

Our GRA van left immediately, as it so often does, heading to the agreed location. There she stood. Small and unsure. Her eyes said it all: she had had enough. Years of obedience, running until her body could no longer cope, enduring humiliations she never deserved. And yet, when we approached her gently, her tail gave a tiny wag. A spark of trust… despite everything.  For this little girl, a new adventure begins today. (more…)

    Very gradual desensitisation…

While the dogs were under anaesthetic the vet vaccinated, microchipped and castrated the galgos. Their convalescence has been very good and they recovered well. Now we have to continue the gentle and steady rehab efforts with them. Of course our approach to the care of these
dogs is supportive with consistent positive reinforcement and very gradual desensitisation to potential triggers. We have kennelled each
one of these galgos with a more confident galgo or galgos, where feasible, to help each one of them build trust and gain confidence. We are pleased that very early signs of progress are starting to show but we still have a long road to travel.

  • Protectora Scooby Medina and the Halloween House of Horrors Rescue 2

More on the rehabilitation of the 9 galgos rescued from the House of Horrors

The 4 fearfuls will definitely need to go to an experienced family home or homes and the 5 should eventually settle into adoption with relative ease.  However, at some level, they all have a degree of anxiety having been simply left alone without daily contact from humans or any carefully managed experiences of, or introductions to doggy life in the outside world. They have certainly all suffered from incarceration and are now showing signs of trepidation when it comes to forming social bonds. Their past has compromised their welfare and this is very clear in their reduced responsiveness to humans. (more…)

  • Galgo Project EU – information needed on the numbers of dogs in shelters

    Open photo

Galgo Project EU is a Dutch organisation dedicated to supporting, rescuing, and giving a voice to galgos and podencos. They work closely with Spanish shelters, help dogs find safe homes, and raise awareness about the structural mistreatment these dogs still suffer.

With Galgo Project EU, we’re gathering data, testimonies, and concrete evidence to build a detailed dossier for the European Parliament. Our goal is clear:

To hold Spain accountable for not applying Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty, and to push for equal, EU-wide protection of all dogs, including galgos and podencos, without exceptions. (more…)

  • 2 young galgos at Galgo Rescue Almeria, looking forward to finding forever homes

    From Sandygalgoslover

Introducing Lotus (3 years old) and Roquita (2 years old). In collaboration with Friends of Mazarrón Animals, these two sweethearts were finally freed from their previous owners.  For both of them, this marks the beginning of a new future, where they can gradually experience what safety, love, and trust truly mean.

Lotus still bears the marks of his past: his body shows both old and recent scars. Yet, we’re already seeing the first signs of recovery. With the right care, rest, and patience, he’ll have every opportunity to regain both physical and emotional balance.
