From Galgos 112
Hi I’m Bono! I’m one and a half years old and they say I’m very friendly and loving. Still hard to believe what happened to me. I lived with my other galgo friends, we shared games and food in a pen. Every once in a while our owner would take us for a run in the middle of the olives, he would get very pleased if we chased the rabbits.
But one day, when I saw him coming to the pen, I thought it was time to go out to chase rabbits, as always I climbed a jump into the trunk of the car but it took longer to arrive than usual, my owner stopped the engine, as other times he opened the trunk and I jumped outside, but that day there was something strange, my owner, without looking at me, got back in the car, started and left leaving me there alone. I didn’t understand anything.
A couple of weeks ago I published about Galgo Roque, rescued by Galgos 112 in a terrible state.
Here’s the latest update, he’s doing ok.
Roque is getting better! Little by little and thanks to Lola his foster mom Roque is recovering, he takes a liver diet and as soon as the analyzes indicate that liver values recover, the treatment for Lehismania will begin. With the medicinal baths, the shells are falling off and he feels very relieved. Thank you Lola for taking care of him so well.
The origin of Galgos Rescue Almería
What started as an idea to open a dog boarding kennel on a piece of land in Cuevas del Almanzora, grew into a safe haven for the most vulnerable souls.
The idea of a dog boarding kennel soon took a completely different turn, one that would change the lives of many dogs.
On August 13, 2017, an urgent request came in: whether we could help with a heavily pregnant galgo. Of course, we said yes.
They move in silence, shadows slipping between olive groves and abandoned buildings, forgotten by those who once used them. Their ribs press against thin skin, their eyes—if they survive long enough—turn dull with despair. The ghosts of Spain are not myths or legends; they are the souls of the Galgos and Podencos discarded each year after the hunting season, their suffering woven into the landscape like an unspoken curse.
Some are left to starve, wandering until their bodies give out. Others meet a crueler fate—hanged, drowned, tossed aside as if their lives meant nothing. Yet, if you listen, you can still hear them. In the quiet of an empty field, in the distant echo of paws that once ran with joy, in the wind that carries their unspoken pleas for mercy.
But ghosts don’t have to remain ghosts. Rescue gives them form again—flesh, warmth, love. Awareness gives them voices. And action gives them justice.
Don’t let them fade. Speak for them. Fight for them. Give Spain’s forgotten souls the ending they deserve. #Galgos #Podencos
Some of you may have known but many didn’t.
Salvador was named by one of our adopters and was so honoured to be that one. He was found in a hellish state having been attacked by the Galguero’s other dogs and left to rot. For everything that followed, Fundación Benjamín Mehnert words will hit you very hard. We send strength, love and eternal thanks to everyone there. He will never ever be forgotten. His name is etched in our hearts forevermore.
It is heartbreaking for us, but for them, it goes beyond..
