News just in from Lynne, one of the volunteers working tirelessly on Lanzarote for the SARA shelter.
“The vet’s arrival is drawing near and we think we have everything prepared. All the medications are ordered, accommodation and hire cars sorted, volunteer helpers are arranged …… so looking good. We hope to have every animal in the shelter neutered by the time they leave and we can even do some of the feral street cats to help with the massive overpopulation on the island.
We have five large outside patios/runs that need some attention and desperately need some form of sun shelter. With soaring temperatures here this is something that is really vital to the animal’s welfare. We have managed to secure a deal with one of the local building suppliers and we have all the materials to complete the job. Once again our volunteers have come up trumps and we plan to do all the work ourselves to keep costs down to a minimum.
Two wonderful people from the UK, Rick and Lesley Beauchamp, recognise the plight of the Podencos here and they want to help in any way they can. They have already adopted two dogs from us and know the problems of waiting for blood tests and the cost of quarantine etc. They have paid for the preparation of four Podencos for adoption in the UK . These dogs have now had their rabies jabs, and will have their blood tests done at the end of this month. They will spend their quarantine time in Sara and should be ready for adoption in November 2009. Obviously, if we find them a home here on the island before then we will release them.
We have never had any animals “UK Ready” before and people wanting to adopt from us have been put off by the waiting time and the expense of quarantine. Hopefully this will all change and we can start sending Podencos to the UK .
Rick and Lesley are going to fund raise in the UK to pay for more “preparations” so people will have more choice. Hopefully, they will have a SARA bank account set up for donations in the near future.
So, apart from the worldwide financial crisis which is affecting everyone – not only ourselves, things are looking good at SARA.”
Contact the SARA shelter direct if you can help them in any way.

Hey Rick & Lesley,
Where are you in the UK as we have a Poddy and our older dog Sammy aged 14 has just passed on so we have a space. Pedro (Poddy) loves other Poddys.
Kind Regards
