Hi Folks
Just to say that I will be silent again for a few days, as I’m off to Spain via Madrid to Cordoba with L’Europe des Levriers to uplift some more galgos deserving of their forever families in mainland Europe, outside Spain.
It doesn’t solve the root problem – lack of control of breeding of galgos, living conditions of galgos, and disposal of them at the end of every hunting season. And it begs the question – if the galguerros – as is now the case – know that if they dump their galgos at the gates of a refuge or perrera, a volunteer association/refuge will take them in and try and rehome them, then it just encourages them to continue to do it!
So, it would be useful to have the comments of readers as to how you see a solution to the problem.
Give me your feedback.

regarding the mass destruction of galgoes the only answer to limit the breeding og galgoes and to come down hard on those who continue despite all the galgoes they already have in their keep. There needs to be a complete change of attitudes towards the galgoes. Those changes has to come from these people themselves perhaps with pressure from abroard. They need to realise that how they keep and treat the galgoes, podengoes ect. is wrong in every sense of the word. Hefty fines and perhaps jailtime should be the result of any mistreatment of these hunting dogs. The import of Irish greyhounds should be stopped afterall they have their own galgoes to consider and more dogs imported to Spain should be stopped. They must learn to take animalwelfare more serious than they do nowadays. Those are the only things that comes to mind right now.

TypePadHi Lisbeth
You are absolutely quite right about how to deal with the problem of the galgos. But it is not easy. As I understand it, each region has its own governing council, can make its own laws, and is in charge of ensuring that these laws are implimented. Having just got back from a drive down to Cordoba, it is difficult to see how – assuming that if a region brought in a law to control the breeding of galgos and that they were not to be disposed of each year – such a law could be implemented. There are so many places out in the country to hide galgos in buildings – as the galguerros already do – and the other major problem is that many of the men on the governing councils are galguerros themselves. Educating children how to treat animals is also something else which is vitally important but, again, very difficult to do because, from a very young age, the children go out hunting with their fathers and grandfathers. And whilst the Spanish will keep a dog in the house as a pet, the galgo is always kept in a shed outside like a garden tool.
It is by all the associations and refuges working together en masse that there is really any chance of anyone taking any notice of what we are all asking – and the problem there is that many of the associations squabble amongst themselves; in France they won’t even join together to form a Federation! How does this help the galgos?

TypePadBonjour
You need to contact the rescue association which is linked into the story of the podencos. Also, contact Levriers en Danger in France, as they are mounting an effort to bring some of these podencos to the mainland.

I am not agree with you for this point that Spain holidays are not for you. It is good that you have stated that you are visiting dog refuges but as per my opinion you should go for holidays in Spain. Spain is truly awesome and out standing place to enjoy the holidays and tour.
Bonjour
I agree there is much beauty to see in Spain. But until the national and regional governments stop the abuse of animals, especially in fiestas, bull-fighting, horse wrestling, stoning donkeys, mass abandonment of galgos and other dogs, then Spain will always receive bad press throughout the rest of the world.
