Sara Animal Shelter on Lanzarote has an urgent appeal for assistance in rehoming four Podenco’s in the UK in November this year.
There are families waiting for these dogs but the travel costs by direct flight are way out of budget (approx 500 euros per dog) so an alternative solution has to be found.
They are hoping to fly the dogs to Germany, Holland or Belgium with holidaymakers acting as flight escorts. The cost of these flights is considerably less, at around 50 euros per dog, but there is a two dog per flight restriction. As it is virtually impossible to find two flights on the same day they would need temporary foster homes until the remaining two dogs can be flown over (hopefully in the same week).
One of the British volunteers will travel overland from the UK to meet the second shipment of two dogs and collect the first two dogs from their foster family.
This is the first time they have attempted adoptions in the UK because of the quarantine restrictions etc but as the shelter has over 200 dogs, over 100 of which are Podencos, they are having to expand their adoption field.
How you can help …….
Are you planning on visiting Lanzarote in November and would you be available as a flight escort?
Do you have available space at home for a short term foster?
Would you be able to meet the dogs at the airport and if so, which airport?
Flight dates, times and airports are not available yet as this cannot be arranged without fixed assistance in one of the above countries. All dogs are blood tested, vaccinated etc and all their paperwork is correct and up to date.
If you think you can help in any way and become a link in the chain, please contact Lynne Fisher on sarashelter@hotmail.com.
Please help them, don’t forget the poor podencos on the Spanish Islands – they suffer so badly without the help of associations like SARA.
